\nBut when the appraisal team saw what the southwestern lady brought in, they were absolutely taken aback and couldn’t help letting their emotions get the best of them. So, what exactly was this special item?

Even though China is across the world, many of us are actually quite used to seeing Chinese décor and art around us. Whether it’s from the movies or just going to Chinese restaurants, some of the most popular decorations that many of us can identify from the culture are cute Chinese teacups, beautifully carved lion or dragon statues, and the iconic “good luck” waving cat figure.\nAnd while it’s fun to be able to buy little souvenirs from Chinatowns all around the states, the Southwestern lady had a very special family heirloom directly from China.

According to this special Southwestern guest on the show, her grandparents traveled a lot to China throughout their lives. In the early 1900s, they toured around the country and bought a very special souvenir for themselves to enjoy – an intricately hand-carved lion statue. Ever since, the lion has been a known treasure in the family, holding a lot of sentimental value for decades. \n“My mother has had it in her house, and then I inherited it and brought it west,” the lady explained to appraiser Lark Mason on Antiques Roadshow.

As we’ve mentioned earlier, it’s always a nice idea to find out what the value of your beloved item is. Why? Well first of all, what you might think is just a cheap piece of junk, could be worth 10 times more than you ever expected. Or, unfortunately, what you thought might’ve been worth thousands, could turn out to be just another average trinket. \nBut to avoid any misconceptions, it’s good to get multiple opinions, too, to be safe. And it turns out that this wasn’t the first time the family tried to find out the true value of this beautiful lion statue.

Besides the fact that this family heirloom had been in the family for years, it didn’t seem like the owner of this elegant Chinese statute knew too much about it. However, she did reveal to the appraiser that this wasn’t the first time that the family had this item inspected.\n“Some years ago, [my mother] knew someone who knew about Chinese art. And he looked at it, and he said it was from the Ming Dynasty [1368 to 1644], he thought, and priceless. And that’s all I know,” she mentioned. \nHowever, soon she would find out that this statue wasn’t what she had thought all these years.

Thankfully, professional appraiser Lark E. Mason Jr. was there to help fill in the gaps about the statute. \nBut before we jump into his thoughts and analysis of the beautifully carved and potentially authentic Ming Dynasty lion, who exactly is he?\nFirst of all, Mason has been a highly-respected appraiser on the Antiques Roadshow since the very first season! But he’s actually been involved with the antique industry since he was 10-years-old. How impressively rare! So, it’s safe to say that he knows his stuff.

Earlier we revealed that each guest on the show is paired up with appraisers that specialize in the category related to their item. So, the owner of the lion statue was very lucky to be paired up with Lark E. Mason, especially since his specialty and focus are Asian art, including Chinese works.\nBut he would soon find out that he was actually the lucky one in the dynamic. As soon as he heard the lady’s background story and what she knew about the beautiful lion figure, he knew he came across something very special and it was time for an intriguing history lesson.

Even though each appraiser on the Antiques Roadshow is an expert, at the end of the day this is still a show – meaning that they know just how to build up the suspense for the big reveal of the true value of the item! \nBut before Mason could even begin explaining the historical significance of the antique, the emotions got the best of him. Struggling to articulate, Mason had already gotten choked up when trying to say the first few words that came out of his mouth.

Trying to hold back his tears, he attempted to settle down his emotions by explaining to the guest on the show just how excited he was. \n“Well, I’ll start out by saying when this came up, I could barely… It’s fantastic. It’s truly… I’m sorry, I’m all worked up,” Mason emotionally expressed in broken words.\nIt’s common for appraisers to get excited about cool collectibles and amazing antiques that guests bring to the show. But this reaction was by far one of the most tear-jerking and heart-warming ones seen on the show. It was clear that this piece was extremely meaningful to him, but what exactly made it so special?

Once Mason had collected himself, he was ready to get the show on the road and start explaining his personal analysis of her prized possession.\nWhen it comes to authenticating and validating an item, there are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration – especially when estimating the value of an antique object. One of them is the rarity of the specific item. And it turns out that this was in a fact a very special piece, indeed.

“I see little, tiny version of these [lions] that come in for sale. But never does one see one like this… Your grandparents bought something when they were on their trip, that you can’t get now,” Mason shared with the lady. \nEven though she had the item analyzed before, who would’ve thought that this little souvenir was actually much more than that? In fact, Mason further explained that this type of piece was such a rarity, that it’s similar to lion statues you would see in museums!

Another important part that plays into the rarity of piece, is the historical value of it. Earlier the owner revealed that the lion sculpture was probably from Ming’s Chinese Dynasty, which ranged from the 1300s-1600 A.D. But it turns out that this piece was created far before that era. \n“It’s not Ming Dynasty. This dates from the golden period of Chinese art, which is called the Tang Dynasty – between the 6th century and the 9th century.” Which basically means that this piece could even be considered an antique during the Ming’s Dynasty days – how wild!

“This is among the finest examples of Chinese art that we have seen on the Roadshow,” Mason further shared with the owner. No wonder he got so worked up about the piece! \nHowever, another thing to take into consideration when you’re trying to value an antique piece of art is the condition of the item itself. \nIt’s clear that this piece had incredibly historical significance and was incredibly rare. But the older a piece is, it’s at more of a risk for damage or deterioration – whether it’s natural or not.\nSo what did Mason have to say about the statue’s condition?

Can you imagine owning a piece of art from over a millennia ago? As incredible as that is, though, it also puts a whole lot of pressure to keep the piece in tip-top shape, literally, centuries later.\nSo, what did the expert appraiser have to say about the thousand old lion?\n“The carving is beautiful. The workmanship is stunning. The carver who did this was truly a master. You can see the muscles rippling under the surface,” Mason eagerly explained to the owner. Phew, what a relief! \nBut now you’re probably wondering, how was the piece able to withhold over all these years?

One of the most fascinating parts about ancient art and architecture, is the fact that many creations were able to withhold for centuries and centuries. From the ancient Egyptian pyramids and idols to Chinese dynasty’s mausoleums and statues, different civilizations all over the globe used all sorts of diverse mediums to construct their structures. \nAnd that’s one of the main reasons why this beautiful white lion sculpture was in such great condition. “It's the finest quality marble you can get. It's truly magnificent. And as you look at this, any way you look at it, it's fantastic, it's breathtaking,” Mason enthusiastically explained.

There’s no doubt that Mason the appraiser was blown away by the beauty of the white lion. And, of course, the historical value and rarity of the piece was absolutely remarkable, as well. But there’s still one more defining factor that would help declare and confirm how authentic this piece actually is. After all, looks can be deceiving. Right?\nNow more than ever, it’s so easy to copy and manipulate objects. But don’t worry, the magnificent Mason had a little trick up his sleeve to validate the authenticity.

Mason confirmed that “the artistic aspect… tells us, clearly, that this was done by a master work, as a master carver.” \nHowever, the thing that would confirm whether or not this was actually a real piece from centuries ago or not, was literally right under their noses.\n“One of the ways that I can tell you what it’s supposed to be… [is] when you look at it underneath, you can see that here’s every indication of great age,” he revealed and clarified to the owner.

AS thousand years ago, artworks weren’t dated with the start or completion date of the piece. They weren’t signed with the artist’s name, either. So, how exactly was Mason able to identify the “great age” of this legendary lion? Well, it’s all in the little details of the piece itself.\n“From the chisel work that’s taken place, to the sort of sandy surface… That gives you the kind of patina that you want to see. It’s something that’s been handled, and it’s been around for a while. It’s a great thing.”

As soon as Mason flipped over the statue, so much was revealed to him. But the most important thing that the condition of the bottom of the statue revealed was the truth about its age. It might not have been in perfect condition, because over time, all things deteriorate or decay. But if anything, it can actually add character to an object. And in this lovely Southwestern lady’s case, it was the final defining factor to authenticate this special piece. \nSo now that the analysis was over, it was time for the appraisal offer.

The beautiful part of Antiques Roadshow, is that people from all walks of life get the opportunity to meet with expert appraisers and talk about their personal belongings. When Mason asked if she was ready to hear the appraisal offer, she mentioned that, “[The selling value is] not important to me, particularly, but I’d be curious, yes.”\nFor her, this piece was something incredibly special and sentimental. Mason was, undoubtedly, super excited about this piece, but when it was time for the ultimate reveal, something the owner never would’ve expected happened and she left speechless.\nEven though she wasn’t interested in selling the piece, Mason still shared his personal opinion about it, just in case she changes her mind in the future. Mason said that after personally evaluating it, and then talking it over with his colleges, he had finally come to a range for an accurate appraisal offer. \n“I would feel pretty confident that one could get between $120,000-$180,000 for it,” Mason claimed.

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” hits too close to home for PBS’s Antiques Roadshow fanatics – meaning that a lot of “junk” people have stored in their attics might actually be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars!
And thanks to the famous touring show, a lovely Southwestern lady was able to find out just how much her family’s precious Chinese art figure was worth. Typically, it’s the item’s owner that is left speechless when they receive an offer that’s well over the expected price, but this time around it was the expert appraiser that was left with unexpected emotions.
Keep on reading to find out why this prized possession was so significantly special in the eyes of an expert.
Finding the True Value of Your Priceless Possession
There’s something extremely exciting when you’re doing some spring cleaning, and find a box full of nostalgic items. Whether it’s some childhood toys or just a painting you remember seeing hung up in your grandparents’ home, the sentimental value on something like that is always priceless.
Screenshot from "Antiques Roadshow"
While an item might seem priceless to us, though, at the end of the day, knowing the true financial value of your prized possession can come in handy – especially if you want to insure it. Which is exactly what this local Southwestern woman decided to do.
Getting the Right Opinions
The thing about getting the true financial value for your item all comes down to who appraises it. Many people go to local pawn shops or second-hand stores, which can be a great and efficient resource. And getting a second or third opinion by an expert is always best.
But as any knick-knack and antique lover out there knows, the ultimate place to get your item appraised by an incredibly experienced expert is PBS’s Antiques Roadshow. Thankfully for this Southwestern lady, the roadshow was heading close to home to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2002.
What is the “Antiques Roadshow”?
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Antiques Roadshow series, we’re here to help explain.
The unique show has been running for 24 years now, with the sole purpose of providing the opportunity for guests to bring in their prized possessions, in order to get a true appraisal assessment by professionals.
What makes the show so special, though, isn’t just their expert appraisers who specialize in a range of categories, but the fact that the show is literally on the road and travels to different cities, allowing people all around the world the chance to participate and learn more about their treasured belongings and family heirlooms.
Part History Lesson
PBS describes the series perfectly, stating that it’s “part adventure, part history lesson, part treasure hunt”.
While the adventurous part of the show is the fact that it travels around different cities, finding artifacts from around the world, the history lesson comes from both the item’s owner backstory and the expert appraisers’ evaluations.
Some people have the coolest background stories for their items, while others don’t know anything at all. Thankfully, though, each appraiser is well-rounded enough to be able to validate and confirm the truth behind an item’s potential value.
Paired Up with a Pro
Because of the high standards and expectations from the Antiques Roadshow, there is a very specific process that goes into the appraisal procedure. As soon as you bring in your personal belonging, you’re paired up with different professionals to analyze the antique item.
And in July 2002, this special guest in New Mexico would be paired up with a group of experts of Asian artwork – Lark Mason, James Callahan, and Dessa Goddard – to analyze and appraise her nostalgic Chinese sculpture.
Once the pros look at the item, they present the owner with the historical background, an authentic analysis and validation, and the financial value.
Professional Demeanor
What makes the show so fun is that some people bring items that are completely worthless, while others have true treasures and rarities that they never would’ve expected. But because the appraisers see so many people come and go with all sorts of trinkets and antiques of all sorts of values, the way they present the final offer is usually set with professional demeanor and poise.

But when the appraisal team saw what the southwestern lady brought in, they were absolutely taken aback and couldn’t help letting their emotions get the best of them. So, what exactly was this special item?
