You probably already know that cheetahs are the world’s fastest animal. But there are so many more interesting things and fun facts about these remarkable large cats that you probably don’t know. Continue reading to find them out.

Cheetahs Have up to 3,000 Spots

Cheetahs are one of the most famous spotted animals. They usually have from 2,000 to 3,000 of them covering their fur. Every cheetah has a distinct spot pattern, making them similar to human fingerprints.

Cheetahs Produce “Meows”

You would probably expect cheetahs to have a powerful roar like all the other big cats. But the truth is that their “voice box” is more similar to domestic cats, which is why they produce meows instead. They also purr.

Cheetahs Are Day Hunters

Cheetahs also differ from most other cats in their approach to hunting. Instead of being nocturnal hunters, they usually hunt by day. According to experts, they got accustomed to day hunting to avoid competition from more powerful predators. When the temperatures get extreme, they hunt their prey at dusk and dawn.

Cheetahs Live in 3 Social Groups

Female cheetahs usually live on their own and only seek the company of male cheetahs during the mating period. Male cheetahs, on the other hand, form “coalitions” that see several specimens take over a part of the territory and protect it. There are also male cheetahs that live solitary lives, but they are not common.

This made cheetahs nearly extinct, but a few of them survived and managed to continue the species to this day. In science, this is known as a population bottleneck. Cheetahs exist in a gene pool so small that the genetic variations among them can compare to those of deliberately inbred livestock.

This makes cheetahs virtual clones. There’s so much that can go wrong for these cats over time because of the lack of genetic diversity. It’s not easy for them to produce healthy offspring. Right now, the death rate of cheetahs in captivity in the U.S. and Canada exceeds the birth rate. The species has very high infant mortality rates — over 20% of infants born in captivity don’t live past six months, while the number for those born in the wild is around 70%, according to Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

Adult cheetahs are vulnerable to disease and the packs are prone to spreading various illnesses to each other.

We bet you’ve never seen something like this – a hunting chase filmed from a cheetah’s point of view. PBS’s latest nature miniseries called Animals With Cameras lets you see animal behavior from a truly unique POV.

“There’s absolutely no way we could see this any other way,” says Gordon Buchanan, the wildlife cameraman in the clip you can see below.

How did they do this, anyway? As you probably imagine, there is a camera strapped to the cheetah’s head. It’s custom made by Chris Watts, a designer at a company that specializes in creating custom cameras for capturing nature and wildlife.
