The smallest mammals in the world are easy to miss; you have to look closely if you want to spot them. Two of them are fighting for the title of the smallest mammal on Earth, and it’s hard to say which one wins – one is the lightest while the other one is the shortest.

The lightest mammal in the world is an Etruscan shrew, measuring at only 2 grams or less.

The #EtruscanShrew (Suncus etruscus), also called the #EtruscanPygmyShrew and the #WhiteToothedPygmyShrew, is the smallest mammal in the world, weighing only .063 ounces. This little creature is only one and a half inches long and is characterized by quick movements and eating one to two times its body weight everyday to satisfy its fast metabolism. The Etruscan Shrew tends to inhabit warm, damp climates and can be found from Europe to North Africa and all the way easy to Malaysia. It is a solitary species, living alone except during mating season. It protects its territory by making chirping sounds and exhibiting aggressive behavior, which can only be so threatening. When not eating, the Etruscan Shrew spends a large amount of time grooming itself. Prey includes small vertebrates and invertebrates, such as insects, lizards, and rodents. The Etruscan Shrew is a fierce predator and can take down animals larger than itself.

But there’s actually one smaller species! Kitti’s hog-nosed bat, also named bumblebee bat, is around an inch long which is truly incredible for a mammal.
