]]>“My grandfather started up a kumihimo (paper braid) factory,” Hitotsuyama shared on a YouTube channel called Great Big Story. “At first he produced kumihimo at home, but then he built a factory right here, where the art studio is now.”
In order to create her sculptures, she twists newspapers and piles them up into layers to make the basic body. She has already built more than 60 animal sculptures and the bigger art pieces take up to three months to finish.
“I became interested in animals when I went to Africa in 2007 and saw a rhino. It had its horn removed and was injured by poachers. It was then that I decided to make animal sculptures.”
