For the past ten years, scientists have been trying to find him a potential partner as he was considered to be the last one of his species.  As part of the campaign to raise funds to find Romeo a mate, his profile was put on a famous dating website. It read: “I’m a Sehuencas (pronounced “say-when-cuss”) Water Frog and, not to start this off super heavy or anything, but I’m literally the last of my species.”

Bolivia’s Alcide d’Orbigny Natural History Museum has collaborated with Global Wildlife Conservation in order to raise money to help save the Sehuencas water frogs from extinction.

After a tough expedition to the Bolivian cloud forest, the team was finally successful in finding Sehuencas frogs. One of the frogs they found was female  (they named her Juliet) – a young and playful water frog and a possible mate for Romeo.  But at the moment, she’s quarantined until the scientists are sure that she doesn’t have any dangerous chytrid fungus, which has been known to have killed the entire population of frogs.
