Nala’s beginning wasn’t easy. She was found lying on the side of the road, left to die. Fortunately, she was taken to the shelter where she remained for 5 years until the day her dad saw an image of her.

“I saw her picture and I just applied. I didn’t ask too much questions. I look at her and smile. The day before I moved to North Dakota, picked her up and we hit the road,” Nala’s dad, Michael Sanders told The Dodo. “These dogs, you know, they can have a good life. Maybe it’s a little more work, but frankly I think it’s more fulfilling.”

Sanders does his best to manage Nala’s health, so every two weeks the duo is traveling from Bismarck to Casselton, which is 185 miles away from each other, so the doggo could get her therapy. Regardless of her condition, she is a sweet happy dog that loves everyone.

“All she’s been through, to be this sweet – it makes you think, ’No matter how bad things are for me, I should never be down,’” her dad added.

“Every time we walk into Disney, she always has a really happy prance,” she told The Dodo and added that her dog is crazy about rides. “Her favorite ride is Pirates. I can’t think of a ride that she doesn’t like. She loves the PeopleMover. She loves the Speedway.”

Megan got the canine at 8 weeks from a breeder, and they started basic obedience training the second day she came home. Besides the crazy rides, Nala also likes the Disney characters. She will go up to them, cuddle with them, and melt many hearts.

“They look like giant stuffed animals to her. She’s always liked the full-body costume characters. She thinks that the big costume ones are like giant dog toys. She’ll try to cuddle with them. She also really likes the face characters, like Cinderella,” Megan added.

If you want to follow their journey, check out the gallery below, or have a look at Nala’s Instagram account.

A service dog is a service dog in a vest or not. Some handlers train their dogs to associate their vest with working/tasking, and no vest with off duty time/free to be a dog/don’t have to help. Though, I never trained Nala to associate her vest with “work.” I want her to know her help is wanted whether we’re at home relaxing or in an environment where she does have to heel at my side and have good public access manners. • That being said, yesterday was a very low key day for us as we weren’t really out in public so she lounged most of the day and played outside, normal dog stuff. She was in “pet mode” for lack of a better phrase, the entire day. I had to run a quick errand later in the evening. I was standing by my car outside the passenger seat on the phone with a friend. Life has been a little bit hectic for me lately and I started to get worked up. Nala heard the change in my voice so there she comes from the back seat, doing her best to try to climb over the barrier, whining and wagging her tail. I was zoned in on what I was trying to do and in the moment, I knew she was trying to come help but I brushed it off. It got significantly worse and she climbed over the barrier completely, threw herself into me, pushing into my face, doing everything I taught her to do so she could to get me to stop crying all with a wagging tail. She was persistent, I didn’t have any treats on me, she just knows her job and loves to do it. I also want to add that she has excellent car manners, never climbs over the barrier, and if the car is moving/on, she is absolutely not allowed to come help. I suppose that could be confusing for her, so I try my very best never ever to drive if I’m getting upset or upset to a level where she would pick up on it. First off, it’s not safe for me and others on the road, and not safe for her. I ALWAYS pull over if I feel like anything is about to go down. I honestly will be investing in a crash tested car seat harness for her, as I would just prefer she’s as safe as possible. • That being said, she doesn’t need to have her vest on to do her job. I know she is always keeping an eye out for me, even if she’s free to chill out, play, and relax.💜
