]]>The Turtle Conservation Center has a normal capacity of 150 turtles, but that number tripled in recent weeks. A rare and powerful storm in South Africa recently forced around 580 baby sea turtles to wash up on the beaches of Cape Town, and the Two Oceans Aquarium is trying to rehabilitate around 400 sick and injured turtles that were brought in after the storm.
It’s pretty common for the number of rescued turtles to rise up after the hatching season. These animals are vulnerable to extreme weather and climate change, but they’ve never arrived at the Two Oceans Aquarium in such large numbers.
Talitha Noble-Trull, the head of the Turtle Conservation Center, sees what happened to these turtles as a blessing in disguise because they’re helping them gather important information about the impact of plastic pollution on their wellbeing.
“For us, it’s very important to be collecting and capturing this data. Because these turtles are coming at us with a message. They’re not telling us. They’re shouting it at us. That our oceans are not a safe place for turtles,” Noble-Trull told NBC News.
