In 1960, Sophia Loren was working on a film in England. She had arrived in the country wearing a lavish and expensive set of diamonds and jewels. A few days later, while she was out meeting her husband, Carlo Ponti, at the airport, the satchel containing her jewels, which included three sets of diamonds, emeralds and rubies, was stolen by a burglar.

To Loren, the jewels symbolized her struggle for success and her rise from her humble origins - and so the theft hurt even more. Not to mention the jewels' worth - £185,000. Adjusted for inflation, that's over £4 million, or over $5 million by today's standards.

Years later, Peter Scott, the British criminal dubbed the King of the Cat Burglars, claimed to have been the one to steal them - although the jewels were never found.
