You probably heard before that crows are among the smartest birds on Earth. Studies have shown they have the ability to solve complex problems and can remember human faces and their acts for years. There are also countless stories from everyday life that confirm this, with the story about a woman who became friends with local crows being the most recent one.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia-based TikTok user @tangobird decided to spend more time building relationships with nature, especially the birds that live nearby her home. She would often leave food on the birdfeeder, and all sorts of birds would come in to get their daily meal. Only a few crows opted to pass on the free food and instead hung out on the nearby tree.

Intrigued by the crows, @tangobird tried to get their attention in several ways and eventually managed to show them that her intentions were pure. The crows started showing up at the bird feeder and quickly became regulars.

However, they didn’t want to continue eating for free and started giving their benefactor gifts ranging from pebbles to clips and pennies.

Proud of her gifts, @tangobird decided to document some of them and share them on TikTok while also introducing her new friends. It turned out that social media has a lot of love for crows, and TikTok users started asking for more. This prompted @tangobird to begin giving her followers regular updates about the birds and the gifts she receives. Check out more of her videos below.

Stuart Dahlquis is a bird enthusiast from Seattle who has been in love with these creatures his entire life. Recently, a family of crows managed to surprise this man with an incredible and creative gift.

“Crows are amazing creatures and I’ve always felt this way since I was a boy. Birds – all kinds – have been a real focal part of my life; I love watching them, listening to their calls, identifying them,” Dahlquist told Bored Panda.

This is why the man and his family were touched when they discovered a family of crows in their front yard.

“They nest in a large douglas fir tree that’s in our front yard and we could hear the babies when the parents would feed them. One day I found both babies had fallen to the ground, almost able to fly but not quite. We got them into a tree and the parents – pretty angry with us actually – took it from there and the little ones survived. We began feeding them soon after.”

They’ve been feeding these crows for almost four years when birds decided to thank the family for all the care they have given them. They left creative gifts two days in a row and Dahlquist he was mind-blown. Nature is really incredible.

In a new research, scientists tried to learn how advanced crows are in making simple tools from scratch. Members of this species have already shown the ability to break off pieces of a branch, forming a hook they would use to pull something. When a male crow had taken all the hooks, the female crow actually made a new one using a piece of wire.

“These crows are just amazing,” said Irene Pepperberg, an avian cognition expert and research associate in Harvard University’s department of psychology. “They are head and shoulders above almost every other avian subjects at toolmaking.”

The birds managed to learn to tear a paper to a certain size, as previously thought by the scientists.

“The tool use and the progressive accumulation of proficiency or of complexity in tools is something that hasn’t been demonstrated in species other than humans to my knowledge,” said John Marzluff, an expert in crow behavior and a professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington. “We’re not so unique ourselves,” he continued about humans, “just perhaps better or more advanced at doing certain tasks.”
