Start by showing your dog what you expect. Hold a treat in a closed fist in front of them, letting them sniff and nudge your hand. Resist the urge to open your fist just yet.
Your dog will likely try various tactics to get the treat, including pawing at your hand. As soon as they lift their paw, even slightly, it’s time for a reward! Say “paw” clearly and open your hand to deliver the delicious treat. This positive reinforcement helps your dog associate the action of pawing with the reward.

If your dog seems a bit confused and isn’t offering their paw, don’t worry! A little gentle guidance can nudge them in the right direction. The moment their paw makes contact with yours, praise them with a “paw” and a yummy reward.
The final step is to fade out the lures. Gradually remove the treat from your closed fist. Focus solely on the hand signal and verbal cue, rewarding every successful “paw” with a treat.

]]>Simba’s human, Olga Jones, recently shared a couple of videos on Instagram that show the pupper doing one of his parkour routines. And it is quite a thrilling watch.
In the first video, Simba can be seen testing out the parkour act, which involves him going across a row of parallel metal bars.
The second video shows Simba fully mastering the routine. He manages to cross the entire row, jumping from one bar to another without breaking a sweat.
Instagram users were amazed with Simba’s act and rushed in the comments section to shower him with praise. Some called it a “superdog,” while others stated that he was simply “incredible.”
What makes it all even more impressive is that Simba actually came up with this parkour routine by himself according to his owner.
“Simba loves parkour. This is the trick he came up with himself. After a bit of practice, he mastered that technique, and it is now one of his favorite parkour exercises,” Jones shared.

]]>Seeing that a lot of people are having trouble with it, dog trainer Charlie Gardiner decided to make a video for her TikTok channel in which she revealed one mistake everyone makes while teaching their dogs to give their paws.
According to Gardiner, you should never try and grab your dog’s paw. Instead, you should let the dog bring their paw to your hand.
She recommends taking a treat and holding it in a fist in front of the dog. They will first try to get it with their nose before eventually patting it with their paw. At this point, you should open your fist and let them have the treat. Eventually, they will learn to give you their paw even without the treat.
Gardiner’s video became quite popular on social media, getting close to four million views. Even TikTok users who don’t have a dog were amazed by it.
“Who watched the whole video without even having a dog?” one user wrote.

]]>Good news: You can teach an old dog new tricks! Older dogs can keep learning and they may even be easier to train than puppies or younger dogs.
Of course, this depends on the dog. Not all dogs can learn in the same way. Some older dogs suffer from physical and cognitive limitations, which makes it difficult for them to perform basic tasks and learn new things.
In general, a healthy dog is able to learn using treats or reward systems. You may just need to be a little more patient.
