Nanda uploaded a video on his Twitter profile that features a woman helping a baby elephant in trouble.

The animal somehow got stuck in roadside mud and couldn’t free itself alone. Fortunately, a local girl who was passing by at that moment didn’t hesitate to lend a hand. She used all of her strength to help pull the elephant out and didn’t give up until making some progress.

Bit by bit, the baby elephant managed to free its legs. This allowed the animal to get closer to the road and pull itself out. After getting free, the first thing the elephant did was raise its trunk as a way to express its gratitude.

“She helped the elephant baby to come out from the mud it was struck in. Baby acknowledges with a blessing,” wrote Nanda in the caption of the video.

The video immediately became a hit on social media, with internet users being impressed with the woman’s actions. One user called the video “so heartwarming,” while the other wrote that “elephant reciprocating affection in the end is beautiful.”

The South China Morning Post recently shared a clip that shows a herd of elephants taking a group nap in a forest near Kunming City. 15 elephants, including three calves, can be seen adorably snuggling together and snoozing to shake off the fatigue after reportedly traveling 313 miles.

According to reports from local media, the herd of elephants left their natural habitat in southern Yunnan province a year ago and have been traveling to the north ever since. The group was tracked on their journey by government drones, which recorded the amazing footage of the nap.

The local officials are doing their best to keep the herd safe on their trip, but also to minimize the damage they can do to villages and towns. They are attempting to steer them by leaving all sorts of snacks (bananas and pineapples) while also clearing the path for them by blocking roads for traffic.

It is still unclear why the elephants decided to embark on such a trip, considering the species rarely goes on long travels. Scientists assume that it has something to do with deforestation in their natural habitat and lack of food sources.

“The size of the rain forests has dwindled, and that caused the wild Asian elephants to leave their home in Xishuangbanna. The expansion of elephant families also increases the odds for them to venture out for a new home,” Zhang Li, an ecology professor who specializes in studies about elephants, explained in a recent chat with Beijing News.

Barton, who was born in Britain, came to Thailand in 1996 to teach English. During that time, he met his future wife Khwan, who is a wildlife artist and animal love. Alongside Kwan, Barton came to appreciate the wildlife and joined her in efforts to preserve it.

Back in 2012, Barton found out about Elephants World sanctuary, which took care of old and sick elephants, many of which were blind. Thinking about the ways he could contribute, Barton decided to try with the musical approach.

“I wondered if these old, rescued elephants might like to listen to some calm, slow classical piano music, so I asked if I could bring my piano along and play to the elephants,” Barton revealed in a recent interview. “They allowed me to do that.”

Barton was encouraged by his first gig, realizing that elephants enjoyed his music. Each elephant had a different reaction, by they all seemed moved by the notes he was playing. Soon, he started playing on a regular basis.

“One of the most memorable [reactions] was playing ‘Moonlight Sonata’ to a big bull elephant called Romsai at night. Romsai is an elephant that mahouts keep away from people due to his strength and dangerous temperament. To be so close to him at the piano under the moon and stars and play music to him was quite special. He seemed to be listening and, from his reaction, liked the music. He let me live,” Barton shared.

According to Barton, although elephants can be dangerous, he didn’t have many negative experiences during his concerts. He keeps a special relationship with each one of them and thinks his music keeps these giants calm and unthreatening.

For example, elephants in Africa learned to use smell as a way to recognize poachers, helping them stay safe. While all of this is impressive, it turns out that the elephants’ sniffing ability might be even more extraordinary.

According to a recent study, conducted by New York City’s Hunter College, elephants apparently can use their smell to differentiate larger and smaller quantities of food without even seeing it.

The study’s lead, psychology professor Joshua Plotnik, explained that six Asian elephants were presented with two buckets, each containing a different number of sunflower seeds and they were prompted to choose the one containing more seeds using only smell.

The results ended up surprising the research team, as the animals managed to correctly guess the larger quantity even when the difference wasn’t visually noticeable.

“Remarkably, some of the elephants were able to distinguish between 150 and 180 sunflower seeds, a difference that would be hard for you or me to determine by sight,” – said Plotnik in a statement. “While we’ve known that elephants have a remarkably acute sense of smell, their ability to distinguish between such subtle differences in quantity introduces new questions about how elephants may otherwise be using this powerful sense.”

Plotnik and his team used 11 different ratios and tweaked the conditions of the test in a number of ways, including using metal buckets that don’t retain odor and each time the results were steady.
