]]>The giraffe spotted coat patterns are not just mesmerizing; they are also one out of one. They could be compared to human fingerprints as there are no two giraffes that have the same patterns on their fur.
Giraffes are able to feed on tree leaves and buds not only because of their necks but also because of their super-long tongues. On average, a giraffe’s tongue is between 18 inches and 20 inches long.
It is difficult for giraffes to drink water, as they either need to spread their legs or bend their knees to reach the water source. This is why it’s not surprising that they’re not huge water drinkers and usually only drink it every few days.
You would think that giraffes can’t run all that fast because of their size. But that is not quite correct. It turns out they can be surprisingly fast, reaching a speed of more than 30 miles per hour in short bursts.
The most giraffes will sleep in a day is 30 minutes, while they can sometimes get by with only five minutes of sleep. Also, they get most of their sleep through quick naps that usually take a minute or so.

]]>By measuring their skeleton, the team found that both specimens have unusually short legs while one had a shorter-than-average neck. An adult giraffe is around 16 feet tall, while the two giraffes observed by scientists were 9 feet 4 inches and 8.5 feet, respectively.
“It is mainly in comparison to other giraffe that [the] difference in stature becomes obvious,” said biologist Emma Wells.
In the report, the scientists concluded that the short stature of these two giraffes is caused by skeletal or cartilaginous disorders. This is a rare occurrence in the wild, but it was known to happen in other species.
“Instances of wild animals with these types of skeletal dysplasias are extraordinarily rare,” said lead researcher Michael Brown. “It’s another interesting wrinkle in the unique story of giraffe in these diverse ecosystems.”

]]>Having a long neck and tall legs makes it hard for giraffes to just put their head down and start eating. Instead, they either get on their knees or spread their front legs wide apart to lower their body.
One Twitter user, who goes by the name of Danny Dutch, recently uploaded a video that shows the second method and amazed tens of thousands of social media users. The reason why the clip became so popular is the fact that the hungry giraffe looks like it’s doing push-ups while eating.

The post by Danny Dutch later received a number of responses, with Twitter users sharing more examples of how giraffes eat grass or drink water.

]]>These adorable tall animals that we absolutely love thanks to their unusually long necks, were a great inspiration for this artist who likes to imagine different animals in our society. Keigo is drawing what their life would look like, if these animals lived among us and the results are very funny.
“Speaking of drawing, I’m interested in animals that have extreme physical characteristics. It all started from the point where I tried to incorporate those characteristics like “too slow”, “too long” into a drawing, and expressed what happens when those characteristics are incorporated into human society,” the artist told in an interview for Bored Panda.
Keigo recently created a series of illustrations with a sloth as the main character, but the stars of his new projects are giraffes. They are playing pool and tennis, swimming, running a marathon, driving a car and many other things that they’re not able to do in real life.

]]>Mammals are mostly protected from the sun by their fur. Still, they have some body parts that are directly exposed to it, and much like humans, they risk sunburns and skin cancer. Dark tongues protect giraffes from harmful sunshine effects. Their tongues are often exposed as they spend a lot of time eating plants.
Black body parts aren’t unique to giraffes. Okapis are also known for having a long black tongue.
