]]>The best-known and most widespread hyena species is the spotted hyena. However, there are three other species that belong to the hyena family: brown hyena, striped hyena, and aardwolf.
Hyenas live in social groups known as clans, which usually consist of 30 to 70 members. There is a strict hierarchy inside the clan, with female hyenas at the top, followed by their young. Native male members of the clan, as well as males who joined the clan, are ranked at the bottom of the hierarchy.
Spotted hyenas produce sounds that remind us of laughter. However, they don’t find anything funny. Instead, it is a sign that they are nervous or feel threatened.
Hyenas will eat anything, and we do mean anything. When they catch prey, they will eat it whole, including bones and horns. They will hunt for their food but also gladly scavenge corpses of dead animals and eat fallen fruit.
Hyenas aren’t just fast runners; they can usually run longer than their prey or their predator. They have exceptional endurance that allows them to run at full speed for several miles without getting tired.

After some tears and tantrums, Wolhuter eventually caved in and allowed the brave little girl to approach hyenas. The animals welcomed Kiki surprisingly well, and they didn’t mind entertaining her for a while.
