]]> Jon Ching is a Hawaii-born self-taught oil painter who loves depicting paintings inspired by nature. With his colors and brushes, he invites birds and other creatures and habitats into his compositions. He says that his love for our winged friends started after receiving a bird photography book as a gift. In his gallery, you can see portraits of birds merged with tropical plants, flower petals, flames. and butterflies.

“Their complexity and prowess in flight was fascinating to me and I was hooked,” the artist told My Modern Met. “My surreal portraits come out of my appreciation of nature’s interconnectedness and adaptation and replacing things that looked similar, like visual synonyms,” he explains. “Nature is already insanely diverse and surreal, so it was a natural course for me to create my own creatures, imagining the boundless magic of the natural world.”

UPDATE: sold 📍 Cempazuchitl | The title of my newest painting is the Aztec word for the Mexican marigold, a prominent symbol and decoration for Dia de Los Muertos. The vibrant color and fragrance are believed to guide the spirits to the living world for the annual celebration of the dead. In my painting, my marigold headed conure just landed back in the living world, successfully reuniting the spirits with their living loved ones. If you scroll, you’ll see that I fully painted the profile. If you’re in SF, I’d be honored if you stopped by @wonderlandsf this Saturday 6-9, to see this piece along side many other beautiful creations, and celebrate with them! #diadelosmuertos #marigold #cempasuchil

Bird in Paradise | This is my tribute to Los Angeles for the LA Local show @galleries1988, opening this Friday 7-9. I’ve been here for almost 2 years and I’ve really enjoyed the vibrancy of this city. Yes, there’s smog and A LOT of asphalt and concrete. But theres also lots of diverse flora around and the Bird of Paradise and palm tree are solidified in my mind when I think of LA, and Southern California in general. I love how the head feathers of the citron crested cockatoo look so much like the Strelitzia reginae flower, which, by the way is the official flower of Los Angeles. This piece will be on view from Feb 1-23 (😶it’s February already?!) Please contact @galleries1988 for sales info.
