Noosa North Shore Retreat, located in Great Sandy National Park, Australia, recently shared a video on its Instagram featuring a lively kangaroo taking a dip in the ocean. The animal can be seen jumping around and enjoying the splashes it produces.

“It’s not everyday you get to see our furry friends exploring the sea and this kangaroo‘s enthusiasm for adventure is infectious. Our ocean enthusiast enjoyed a few laps before he decided to jump back out of the ocean – happy and healthy,” Noosa North Shore Retreat wrote in the caption of the video.

While footage of a kangaroo in the ocean might be unusual for some, the fact is that kangaroos actually don’t mind water at all. Also, they are quite good swimmers and can move even in deep waters by propelling themselves with their strong tails.

Kangaroos mostly decide to enter the water when they need to cool off from Australia’s high temperatures. They will also do it to escape a predator or when they are scared by humans.

Recently, a group of friends was hanging out in a bar when they noticed a kangaroo behind the door entrance.

“My mates and I were enjoying a few cold ones when a kangaroo hopped on into the pub, straight through a sports team’s mad Monday celebration and into the smoking area,” one of the friends told ViralHog.

You may think that when a kangaroo suddenly hops through a bar, it would be a big deal and people would start to panic, but no one in the bar seemed to be shocked by the encounter. The kangaroo hopped all the way through the bar and exited the back door, and people hardly noticed it. And the kangaroo himself also looked unbothered.

After measuring the force exerted from the tail on the ground, the researchers found it to be the key factor for their moving speed, even more than their legs. Kangaroos plant their tales on the ground before moving, basically using them as a third leg. This is a significant find that gives tail more credit than the previous theory that it was simply used for balance.

Speaking for Guardian Australia, Terry Dawson, an academic from the University of New South Wales, explained:

“We weren’t quite sure why kangaroos diverged so much from the normal patterns of movement found in other animals.”

“Previous studies thought the tail was just a strut, but it’s actually the front legs which are struts, they don’t provide much force. It’s the back legs and tail which provide the propulsion, much more than we previously thought,” he continued.

“We didn’t know the kangaroos were using the tail as a third leg. Without that, the tail wouldn’t need to be so strong, although it would need to be pretty heavy because it is a large animal moving at speed. The males also use it for fighting, sometimes balancing on it completely in order to kick another kangaroo,” Dawson said.
