]]>Some of her paintings include endangered birds, calling to mind the importance of protecting avian species. “Endangered birds are a gauge to the health of our environment,” Tanner writes on her website.
“By protecting the endangered we reassess our environment and our actions to come up with solutions for the species survival. It leads to growth, education, community and improves the environment, wouldn’t you say these are all great reasons to protect the endangered?”
Having studied illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and oil painting with Daniel Keys as well as several other contemporary master painters, Tanner now utilizes her talent to develop and promote the work of others, teaching and sharing her knowledge of classical oil painting.
But her work also includes a lot of research, as she studies her subjects outdoors. “One time I travelled 12,000 kilometers for a species,” she recalled in a piece posted on Artsy Shark. “Crazy, right?” According to Tanner, many people do not see birds because they are small and fleeting. “But with a long lens, I have witnessed extraordinary behaviour that inspires me deeply,” she explains.

]]>Her unique paintings are a blend or realism and surrealism, with the animals painted against dramatic backgrounds, featuring splashes of color alongside patches of texture and pattern.
“When beginning a new work, I create the backgrounds first,” relayed Velozo in a piece posted on Artsy Shark. “They represent an abstract version of an environmental landscape in which the featured animal will be placed.” According to Velozo, she works quickly in this stage, often utilizing water, sponges, collage, and layering. “I believe this evokes a sense of movement and depth,” she explains.
Next, she uses watercolor to create the smaller creatures and birds which will be hidden in the background of the scene. Finally, she sketches and paints in the main feature, usually a bird, as the focal point of the painting. “Other than the realistic feature, I try not to have too much of a developed, preconceived idea of what I want the painting to look like when I begin,” says Velozo. The final piece is meant to stir your emotion, encouraging a feeling of care and concern for the natural environment.
Aside from paintings, Velozo work is also now printed on facemasks, highlightingβnow more than everβthe importance of listening to what nature has to tell us in this day and age.

]]>For most of her adult life, artist Alison Nicholls has been promoting awareness about conservation issues through her paintings and sketches. Inspired by the people, wildlife, and landscapes of Africa, Nicholls works with conservation organizations and leads what she calls “Art Safaris” for Africa Geographic.
After living herself for several years in Botswana and Zimbabwe, she now regularly returns to Africa to sketch in the field, and teach others to take her lead. “My Conservation Sketching Expeditions allow me to visit African conservation organizations, sketch on site and learn in detail about conservation issues,” she explains on her website. “I use the resulting sketches and paintings to raise awareness and funds for the organizationsβ field work. These visits also inspired the creation of a growing body of conservation and environmental-themed paintings based on issues I have encountered in the field.”
According to Nicholls, she makes a donation to African conservation organizations from every purchase of her art, which includes acrylics, watercolors, limited editions, and daily sketches. Her work can be also bought from her Etsy shop.
“Everywhere people are suffering physically, financially and mentally from the pandemic and obviously this includes many Africans who work in tourism, wildlife research or conservation,” she recently wrote in a blog post. “Much vital conservation work involves people rather than wildlife. Reducing human-wildlife conflict, conducting anti-poaching patrols, or helping rural people find sustainable income-generating opportunities are all conservation activities that help people but also ensure the continued existence of endangered species.”

So what was her inspiration to create these magical paintings?
βMy ideas are often science-inspired, but with a surreal twist. I may read or hear about a scientific or environmental phenomenon and it provides a kernel of inspiration which can lead to a painting or an entire series,β the artist wrote on her website.
βI think of the animals in my paintings as simultaneously representing the natural world and also reflecting our own human struggle and emotion. I like to draw parallels between the two.β
