Before you plan to donate your Christmas tree to the local zoo next winter, you should know that elephants don’t actually eat the trees that have been used for the holiday. They get fresh, moist trees that local vendors didn’t sell.

]]>We were curious to learn why these babies flamingos aren’t pink yet, so we turned to Wikipedia that says, “Young flamingos hatch with greyish-red plumage, but adults range from light pink to bright red due to aqueous bacteria and beta-carotene obtained from their food supply.” Apparently, the stronger their feather color is, the healthier they are and the more desirable they are as mates. White or pale flamingos are usually unhealthy and lacking important nutrients.
Their color also depends on where they live; American flamingos are typically a brighter red color because they intake more beta carotene through the food that’s available to them.

]]>The baby was born on April 23 at 12:30 a.m. to mom Akuti and dad Suru, after a 15-month pregnancy. Akuti and Suru couldn’t breed naturally, so they had a special team of professionals perform the artificial insemination in early 2018. The zoo staff monitored the pregnancy and the mom rhino got the best prenatal care.
The Zoo hopes this is a step in maintaining “a healthy population under human care of this highly vulnerable species,” since there are less than 3,000 Indian rhinos left in the wild.
