Poodles are often associated with luxury and leisure, but there’s much more to these elegant and intelligent dogs than meets the eye. Known for their curly coats and friendly demeanors, poodles actually pack a lot of surprises in their pedigreed backgrounds. Here are three fun facts about poodles that might surprise you.

Poodles Are Originally Hunting Dogs

Despite their posh reputation today, poodles originated as duck hunters in Germany. They were known as “Pudel,” which relates to splashing in water. Their curly, moisture-resistant coats were perfect for retrieving game from water, and their sharp minds made them excellent at following commands.

Poodles Come in Three Sizes

It’s not one-size-fits-all for this breed! Poodles are unique among dogs in that they come officially in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Each size has the same breed characteristics of intelligence and elegance, just in slightly different packages.

Poodles Are Hypoallergenic

One of the biggest perks of poodles is their coat. Poodles are famous for their hypoallergenic fur, making them an excellent choice for families with allergies. Unlike most dogs, poodles have hair that resembles human hair more than fur, which means they shed less, and dander (a common allergen) is less of an issue.
