It’s estimated that there are around 8.7 million species on Earth and we’re discovering new ones every day. Even the experts don’t know the majority of them, but there’s a new app that can help you recognize species you get in touch with.
iNaturalist uses artificial intelligence and a huge database to recognize a photo of a plant, animal or insect you upload to it. Around 10 million searches have already been made through the app and it’s only getting more accurate with more people using it.
The app is also helping scientists identify new species that have never been seen before. It happens that regular people upload a photo of an animal they are curious about, only to turn out that it’s actually a completely new species that hasn’t yet been discovered.
