A cat named Mimi was recently reunited with its owners, Richard and Maria Price, after she went missing a decade ago. It is believed that she spent the past 10 years living on the street before being brought to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center and identified thanks to a microchip.

Mimi escaped through an open door one day in 2012 and was nowhere to be found. Price family spent more than a year searching for it all around New York and posting fliers, but didn’t have any success. They ended up making peace that their beloved pet would never return and have recently relocated to Spain.

In early December, a kind stranger found the cat on the street and was worried about her well-being. They brought it to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, and the veterinarians gave her a thorough checkup. It was at that point that they discovered the cat had a microchip.

The staff ended up finding the new contact of Richard and Maria Price and contacted them. The couple first believed it was some kind of scam but were later thrilled with the news.

“This is an incredibly rare Christmas miracle,” Richard Price said in a chat with The Washington Post.

Richard and Maria are now working on bringing Mimi to Spain. They already have three other cats and believe they will be thrilled to welcome a long-lost sister. Richard will travel to the U.S. in January to pick up Mimi, who found a temporary home with his sister.
