Chimpanzees Sometimes Drink Alcohol in the Wild

A group of apes who love to have a drink together has been discovered. This revelation might finally give us the answer as to why we enjoy alcohol so much.

Alcohol-drinking chimpanzees are the first empirical evidence of “long-term and recurrent ingestion of ethanol” among apes.

The scientists conducted a 17-year experiment during which they observed wild chimps in western Africa. During that time, they noticed the apes drinking fermented palm sap with a leafy “sponge”.

Both male and female apes are drinking, and the amounts vary from around 2.5 to 84ml.

Until we find out why this happens, Cheers to them!
