A clever black dog has found a way to secure himself an unlimited supply of treats at the store – by paying them with leaves.

The campus of Colombia’s Diversified Technical Education Institute of Monterrey Casanare has been home to this dog for the last five years. He was adopted by the school’s faculty and he serves as a guardian, who loves to roam around the campus’ premises.

During the early days of the dog’s stay at the school, he came to know the local store where students buy food on their breaks, and sometimes they’d buy him cookies. This is probably where the observant dog learned about trading and decided to try it on his own.

“He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange,” teacher Angela Garcia Bernal told The Dodo. “Then one day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie.”

The store’s attendant was amazed by the dog’s intelligence and couldn’t help but “sell” the adorable dog a cookie.

“He comes for cookies every day,” Gladys Barreto, a longtime store attendant, told The Dodo. “He always pays with a leaf. It is his daily purchase.” After the dog realized his money literally grows on trees, the staff decided to allow it to buy treats only couple times a day.

The dog has been doing the trade for several years now and they made sure he’s only getting treats that are safe for dogs to eat.

“When you first see it, you almost want to cry,” Bernal shared. “He’s found a way to make himself understood. He’s very intelligent.”
