When dogs see their reflection, they can’t recognize themselves. Instead, they believe it some other dog looking at them and often perceive it as an intruder. One pet owner learned this the hard way when she saw her dog Piper being shocked after seeing her reflection in a food bowl.
A video shared by Piper’s owner on TikTok shows the dog munching on some food from a metal food bowl. She suddenly stops eating and starts staring into the bowl.
“Don’t look at yourself, don’t look at yourself,” her owner can be heard saying.
However, it is already too late. Piper saw her reflection and started barking at the food bowl while taking a few steps back. It isn’t until her owner approaches and picks up the food bowl that she starts eating again.
While some TikTok users found the video amusing, others felt sorry for Piper and recommended that she get a new food bowl.
“Get her a new bowl please,” one user wrote in the comments section.
“I think piper might need a plastic bowl,” another added.
A few days later, Piper’s owner shared a follow-up video that showed the dog got a new ceramic bowl.
