Deadpool & Wolverine is taking the theatres by storm, and it’s given us many unforgettable cameos. The rescue dog Peggy was one of the best supporting players in the role of Dogpool, but how did she go from “Britain’s ugliest dog” to Hollywood superstar?
Peggy is a crossbreed between a Pug and a Chinese Crested Dog, and her beginnings were pretty humble. She was the runt of an accidental litter and was still looking for a loving home even after all of her siblings had been adopted – until Holly Middleton walked into her life.
Despite her quirky appearance, Middleton fell in love with Peggy right away, but even she couldn’t know her pup was destined to become a star. Peggy won a competition for Britain’s ugliest dog in 2023, and this eventually led the team behind Deadpool & Wolverine to cast her in this movie.
Ryan Reynolds was one of the people pushing for Peggy’s casting and even described her as “the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson.” Director Shawn Levy was equally impressed by her and said that “Peggy beat out lots of contestants because of her sheer ugliness”, despite the fact she never set foot on set before.
“Peggy had never been trained to do anything. So once we found Peggy, she went into training for this movie. And she trained! Like, cut to the Rocky training montage,” said Levy during the film’s world premiere in New York.
