Jane Carkill’s Paintings Put Domesticated Birds in the Spotlight

We’ve seen many artists honor birds through their paintings and illustrations, but the majority of them are inspired by birds that can only be seen in the wild. Jane Carkill decided to take a different route and use her paintings to spotlight the overlooked beauty of domesticated birds.

Carkill is an Irish illustrator and textile designer, who got her degree in fine art textiles at the School of Design and Creative Arts at Atlantic Technological University. She decided to use the power of social media to share her talent with the world, and she’s followed by 140,000 people on Instagram, in addition to selling her work on the Etsy page Lamb Little Shop.

Flora and fauna are Carkill’s ultimate source of inspiration, and she’s trying to capture the essence of nature by combining the elements of folklore, narration, myth, and story. She’s largely inspired by her everyday experience in the countryside, and that’s why she often focuses on subjects we rarely see in the works of other artists who focus on nature.

Birds often make their way into Carkill’s illustrations, and you don’t have to be an avian expert to recognize her subjects. She’s mostly inspired by domesticated species overlooked by her peers, including ducks and chickens that she encounters every day.
