Molly Burgess is Sewing Together the Most Fascinating Fiber Insects

Molly Burgess is a talented fiber artist based in Michigan, and most of her creations have one thing in common. She specializes in making soft fiber sculptures that put a dreamy and whimsical twist on a wide array of different insect species.

Burgess has been dreaming about being an artist her whole life, and the work she’s doing right now started taking roots when she became a seamstress. She spent almost a decade making window treatments, bedding, and light upholstery for an interior design company, but this job became so draining that she decided to quit it and pursue something more creative.

Insects served as inspiration for her soft fiber sculptures from the get-go, and the first thing she tried to make was a cicada art piece. It was such a fun experience that she decided to try making art inspired by other insect species, and she’s been doing it ever since.

Her art blends the elements of a natural and fantastical world, but she’s trying to make her natural pieces as true to life as possible considering the medium.

“My natural pieces are based on actual species that occur in nature. Monarch butterflies, luna moths, etc. I use paint and embroidery (both by hand and machine) to make these little guys resemble the actual creatures as close as possible,” she told Canvas Rebel.
