It’s no secret that butterflies have a pretty short life span, but what if we told you that it was possible to enjoy their beauty for the years to come? Insect preservation has been on the rise in recent years, and Rita of Moth & Petal is taking it to new heights through her art.
Rita is based in Australia and she’s been in love with nature for as long as she can remember. She eventually decided to study ecology and biodiversity conservation at university, and this was where she fell in love with insect preservation.
“I became completely enamored with the diversity and wonder of the world of entomology… Many of my stunning specimens would ordinarily live for just a few weeks, even days, so it is very special to me to be able to preserve their beauty in a meaningful and lasting way,” she explains on her official website.
Most of the specimens used in her art are sustainably sourced from reputable insect farms. She mostly focuses on preserving moths and butterflies and displaying them in beautiful vintage frames. There are exceptions to this rule, and some of her frames also showcase spider webs, cicadas, beetles, and other insects.
