Newborn Red Wolf Pups Have No Idea How Rare They Are

Last week, ten red wolf pups were born at the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC),  New York and people believe this is a hopeful news because these wolves are facing extinction again for the second time.

This kind of wolf was declared extinct in the wild in 1980, but due to the efforts to reintroduce the wolves from captive populations, many hope that they would come back. There are 130 red wolves in the wild four years ago but today, fewer than 30 remained.

Wolf Conservation Center reported that the reasons for the initial extinction of red wolves in the wild are hunting, trapping, and poisoning. While the future of these animals are still unclear, the 10 newborn red wolves are well taken care of at the WCC, by their parents and specialists.

“Beyond being cute, the pocket-sized wolf pups represent our active participation in an effort to save a species on the brink of extinction,” Maggie Howell, executive director of the WCC told The Dodo. “It’s our goal to use moments like these to further educate the public on the importance of protecting these wonderful animals.”

Red Wolf Story

10 red wolf pups were born at the Wolf Conservation Center last week, but fewer than 30 remain in the wild. Hunting, trapping, and poisoning caused the initial extinction of red wolves in the wild. Today the world’s most endangered wolf is facing extinction for a second time. Urge U.S. Fish and Wildlife to recommit to preserving the last wild red wolves.
