Painter Paints Endangered Animals To Raise Awareness

It’s known that wildlife is becoming extinct- but what are we going to do about it? A Digital artist based in the Maldives known as shimhaq on Instagram, has dedicated 2019 to this educating others about this cause – biodiversity conservation.

He draws endangered animal each day for a whole year to raise awareness about the extinction of animals. We are the first generation that has a clear picture of the value of nature and the enormous impact we have on it, and we may be the last generation that can act to reverse this trend.

His work has gone viral and people are learning about these beautiful animals that might not be around in the future.

A very late 45th day! . Together with the chimpanzee, the bonobo is man's closest living relative.They live in stable communities that may have up to 150 members, although these will usually split into smaller groups in order to forage or travel. One of the striking features of bonobo society is sex, which is commonly used for social communication in order to diffuse situations and create bonds. . The bonobo is found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa,are threatened by loss of habitat as large areas of rainforest are being cleared to make way for agriculture, for timber extraction and for development .Although traditionally not targeted by hunters as a result of local taboos,this species is today at risk from the bushmeat trade; the demand for which has recently increased, threatening much of Africa's wildlife.The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) has recently recognised the urgent need to protect our closest relatives and has established a Great Ape Survival Project (GRASP) aimed at identifying the conservation initiatives required to secure the future of the apes and obtaining political support and funding to allow these to be achieved. . #bonobo #365daysofendangered #endangeredspecies #conservation #art

Attenborough's long-beaked echidna  is one of the three species from the genus Zaglossus that occurs in New Guinea. It is named in honour of Sir David Attenborough.Given the ongoing anthropogenic disturbance of its Cyclops Mountain forest habitat, this has raised concern that its populations may already be endangered or even locally extirpated. The echidna is endangered by hunting and habitat loss. . In fact, in the 1900s, it was thought to be extinct until some of their "nose pokes" were found in the mountains of New Guinea. These "nose pokes" are very distinct and represent the echidna's feeding techniques. This animal is so high in the endangered-species list that locals are being educated on this creature and asked to stop their tradition of hunting and killing it and sharing it with rivals as a peace offering. . #echidna #endangeredspecies #365daysofendangered #conservation

The Mellers duck  is distinguished by its unfortunate reputation as one of the rarest species of wildfowl and is endemic to Madagascar. Lake Alaotra, Madagascar’s largest lake, is believed to be one of the most important sites for this endangered bird. . . The wetland habitats of Madagascar have suffered widespread modification since humans arrived on the island around 1,500 years ago. Compounding the threat of habitat loss and degradation is hunting. There are some laws in place to control hunting of this species. The giant otter, known through much of its range as the 'river wolf', is one of South America's top carnivores and is the largest of the otter species in terms of total length. Its distribution has been greatly reduced and is now discontinuous. . .Decades of poaching for its velvety pelt, peaking in the 1950s and 1960s, considerably diminished population numbers. The loggerhead is one of the most widespread of all the marine turtles and also the most highly migratory, with individuals known to cross the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans . . . According to the 2009 status review of loggerheads by the Fisheries Service, drowning from entanglement in longline and gillnet fishing gear is the turtles’ primary threat in the North Pacific. Caught in this unattended equipment, loggerheads risk serious injury or drowning. Nearly 24,000 metric tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year. Turtles ingest a wide array of this floating debris causing numerous health concerns.  Loggerheads are unlikely to be deliberately hunted for their meat, which is not considered a delicacy, but eggs are collected in many parts of the world.
