A few weeks ago, a 13-year-old dachshund mix named Reese was dumped on someone’s lawn in Fayetteville, Georgia, with a handwritten note.

“I hope whoever gets this [will] please take care of my dog,” the note reads. “I love her so much, but I don’t have time for her … I wish I didn’t have to do this, but I have four kids and no time for her.”

Luckily, the woman who lived on the property took the dog into her home. But the woman couldn’t keep Reese forever since she can no longer take care of another dog, having 3 pets already. So she decided to post about Reese in a Facebook group and someone tagged Royal Animal Refuge, a local rescue group and shelter.

Robyn Klein, a veteran foster carer at Royal Animal Refuge, temporarily took the senior dog until they found her a new home. But when Klein’s mom, Suzy Reeves, met Reese for the first time, she knew there was special about the dog.

“[Klein’s] mom is an older lady … and she just recently lost her baby [dog] a few months ago, so she stepped up to foster,” Mariel Weigand, shelter director for Royal Animal Refuge, told The Dodo. “Robyn said her mom is so in love with Reese already.”

Reeves was planning to only foster Reese, but she ended up adopting her instead. “She’s very happy to give her a home,” Weigand shared. “She told me she’s going to be loved, and it’s a happy ending for Reese.”
