Should Your Cat Be Drinking Dairy Milk?

It’s no secret that cats love the taste of dairy milk, but is it any good for them? Just like people, cats are prone to loving things that do them more harm than good, and here are a few things you should keep in mind before feeding them dairy milk.

Lactose Intolerance

As cats grow older, they often lose the enzymes needed to properly break down milk. That’s not the case with every cat species, but most of them will struggle to digest milk sugars.

Health Issues

In addition to developing their own kind of “lactose intolerance”, cats will often deal with a variety of health problems after consuming milk. Diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort may occur after they drink cow milk, so it’s best to remove it from their diet.

Nutritional Properties

Another tricky thing about dairy milk is that it tends to be high in sugar, calories, and fat. Milk does not provide essential nutrients that cats need, and it shouldn’t be the main part of their diet.

Better Alternative

Luckily, there are many alternatives you can use to replace dairy milk in your cat’s diet. Water should be their main source of hydration, but using milk formulated for cats is also an option.
