Bees and wasps look strikingly similar at first, but they couldn’t be more different. One is a hard-working insect that is crucial for the ecosystem and gives us delicious honey, while the other one is an aggressive little thing that won’t hesitate to attack you. Let’s check out some other differences between the two.

Appearance

Both bees and wasps both have black and yellow stripes on their bodies. However, the body of a bee is usually slightly thicker and covered with hair that helps it catch more pollen. Wasps have slender bodies without any hair.

Sting

Bees will sting a human only when attacked and can only sting once. This is because they usually have a barbed sting that gets caught in the human skin and gets pulled off when they try to escape, at which point they die. Wasps, on the other hand, might sting humans as soon as they notice them and can do it multiple times because of a smooth sting that doesn’t get stuck.

Diet

Bees only feed on pollen and nectar. Wasps, on the other hand, feed on sugars from whatever source they can. Sometimes, it is flower nectar and honeydew, and other times, it is your sweet drink of ice cream. On top of that, they also feed on larvae of other insects.

Honey Production

Out of 20,000 species of bees, around 800 of them produce honey. On the other hand, there are thousands of wasps, 17 of which can produce honey. But while bees produce an abundance of honey, wasps make small amounts that are only sufficient for their needs.

Bees are the original nature’s artists. Their honeycombs are an astonishing display of vision, hard work, and meticulous execution.

These little insects recently gave another example of their enormous talent by teaming up with artist Tomas Libertiny to create a honeycomb statue of Ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti. Libertiny did the preparation work, creating a frame for the statue that was specifically designed to guide the bees through the process. He then employed around 60,000 hard-working bees to bring his idea to life in 2018.

The bees worked on the piece for around two years, finally finishing it by the end of 2020 and the statue is now on display at Rademakers Gallery in Amsterdam. It’s on sale for $40,000!

“It is a testament to the strength and timelessness of ‘mother nature’ as well as its ancient character as a powerful female reigning against the odds,” Libertiny told designboom in a recent interview.

This wasn’t the first time Libertiny collaborated with bees—he has several other sculptures in the series that you can check out below.

In a statement for Colossal, the artist explained that her unique pieces are “inspired by nature, with a tiny sense of magic.”

“I love to try and emulate a sense of romanticism in my embroideries. I like to study numerous references of the object I want to embroider,” Ferris said.

“For example, I must have saved hundreds of reference photos and watched many videos of the blue morpho butterfly, before digitally painting the butterfly in Photoshop, then transferring the pattern to fabric and bringing the butterfly to life with so many shades of blue thread. I couldn’t count them.”

We really enjoyed browsing through her Instagram page and we believe that you will enjoy it, too. If you are interested in her work, follow her for future updates or have a look at her Etsy store.

B.’s account is run by Fondation de France, a philanthropic network that wants to raise awareness about the endangered bees. The bee population is getting smaller and smaller and the foundation needs to raise money in order to help them survive.

B. has been on Instagram since April this year. She quickly gained a lot of followers who enjoy seeing her in photos typical for influencers. Scroll down to see some of those photos and follow her to join the movement and see more of B.

Bee populations have been declining rapidly over the past couple of years and to draw attention to this global problem, Papa John’s created the world’s first pizza for bees.

This special mini pizza made for bees is called “The Beezza” and it’s based with passata and topped with wild flowers, rosemary, and thyme. Apparently, the bees loved it!

Darryl Cox, senior science and policy officer of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, said they’re delighted that Papa John’s is supporting their work to protect and feed the nation’s bumblebees

“It may seem hard to believe, but without bumblebees, there would be no pizza. Tomato plants hold their pollen in extremely tight structures and literally need a bumblebee to buzz the pollen out to fertilize the flowers. This free-bee service means we can produce enough tomatoes to satisfy the global demand for pizza and other tomato-based products”, Cox said in an interview with Food & Wine.

The Beezza is made especially for bees, but Papa John’s create another pizza for us called “Bee Sting”. This one is topped with chilies, pepperoni, and honey and people who buy this pizza online can donate the change to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust until September 1.

Oh, Australia.

What exactly is it about you that you have become home to all sorts of dangerous and cunning creatures?

From countless sharks to saltwater alligator, box jellyfish, and the eastern brown snake, Australia is home to some of the deadliest creatures in the world. But, we’re talking about Australia right now, not in the context of it being home to dangerous creatures, rather, because of how a unique species of bee calls it home.

The Australian breed of bees known as the Tragonula carboonaria, or the Sugarbag bee, are native to Australia and are quite unique.

Unlike other bees who have the ability to painfully sting you once threatened, these bees don’t sting. Not only that, but the swarms create one of the most unique structures in the animal kingdom as they create spiral hives that are truly amazing to watch.

Bees play an important role in our lives. They are the world’s most important pollinator of food crops. It’s estimated that one-third of the food we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees.

It’s not easy being a bee, bees work hard and they need their beauty sleep as well. Recently, wildlife photographer Joe Neely captured two cute bees taking a nap in on a flower. The shot shows a beautiful side of bees that we rarely get to see.

“The story behind this photos [begins when] me and my fiancé Niccole went out to find poppy flowers,” Neely told Bored Panda. “On the way back we saw this patch of pink flowers just off the highway so we stopped to take some photos.”

“I came over and study it for a while and more bees showed up. Soon, all the vacant flowers were occupied and this one bee was left out.  She crawled over to this open flower and got inside with the other one. I was watching as he stumbled around almost drunk-like and then got settled in.”

Bees are extremely hard-working, we know that. But after working day and night, even bees need to rest for a while and take a nap. Thanks to wildlife photographer Joe Neely, now we have a unique chance to see how bees sleep, and it’s adorable!

Neely discovered bees sleeping by accident when he went out to find poppy flowers with his fiancé Niccole one day. The couple was taking pictures and they heard bees buzzing about when they noticed that some of the bees were actually in the orange flower called Globe Mallow – and they weren’t moving.

“Well, I never knew that bees slept in flowers but as it turns out these bees (Diadasia diminuta) sleep in the orange flowers called Globe Mallows”, said Neely.

He captured this adorable moment of bees getting their beauty sleep and apparently, they’re sleeping in couples. But how can we even now that the bees are sleeping? Brandon Hopkins, a bee researcher at Washington State University, explained.

“They don’t have eyelids, so you can’t just look for bees with their eyes closed. By carefully watching bees, scientists have found that honey bees stop moving their antenna and in some cases fall over sideways.”

Sleeping patterns of bees depend on the species and where they live, but they usually take shifts to get a few hours of sleep.
