Beluga whales are one of the most common whale species held in captivity due to their docile nature, but nothing compares to seeing them in the wild. If you want to see belugas in their natural habitat, these three useful tips will help you get the job done.

Perfect Timing

Timing is everything when it comes to seeing beluga whales in their natural habitat. It’s usually best to wait for the summertime because belugas tend to migrate to shallow coastal waters during the summer months, making this time of the year most popular with whale watchers.

Right Place

Do your research before going beluga watching and pick the right location, ideally one where you can join a whale-watching tour with experienced local guides. Churchill, Manitoba, and Cunningham Inlet in Canada are some of the most popular locations for beluga watching, but the list goes on and also includes parts of Greenland, Alaska, and Norway’s Svalbard archipelago.

Come Prepared

Whale watching requires a lot of patience so keep your eyes on the prize and stay focused during your tour. Consider bringing binoculars or a camera with a long-focus lens along so you could get a closer look at belugas without disturbing them.

Seeing beluga whales is not uncommon, but Ina Mansika and a group of her friends recently had the chance of meeting the sweetest beluga whale ever.

This adorable whale appeared in the waters around the Norwegian port city of Hammerfest and has been hanging around there ever since. The Beluga’s incredibly friendly nature made it a star among local people, who enjoy feeding and taking selfies with it.

Ina Mansika and her friends also decided to go and see the animal, when something odd happened. The whale proved to be not only friendly, but incredibly polite as well.

“We laid down on the dock to look at it and hopefully get the chance to pat it,” Ina Mansika said to The Dodo. “I had forgotten to close my jacket pocket and my phone fell in the ocean. We assumed it would be gone forever, until the whale dove back down and came back a few moments later with my phone in its mouth!”

There are more than 80 whale species in the ocean but Belugas certainly stand out from the rest and they are very sociable animals. The word beluga comes from the Russian word “bielo” meaning white. But did you know that these white whales are born dark gray? It takes up to eight years before they turn completely white.

Here are other amazing facts about these bubbly whales.

  1. Belugas are sometimes referred to as “melonheads,” because of their bulbous forehead. They can change the shape of their foreheads by blowing air around their sinuses.
  2. Belugas are one of the most vocal of all whales. They have earned the name “sea canary,” because of their rich and varied vocal range. And what is more amazing is the fact that they can imitate human speech. A whale named NOC, who lived at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego for 30 years, was one of the first belugas to mimic the speech of its human handlers.
  3. They use bubbles to communicate. Belugas are also experts when it comes to bubble-blowing. Rings and bubbles released from their blowhole are believed to be a sign of playfulness, but other bubble shapes are assumed to serve more functional purposes.
  4. Their pale color helps them survive. As belugas swim among the polar ice caps, their pigmentation is believed to act as camouflage to protect them from predators like killer whales and polar bears.
  5. Unlike most whales and dolphins, the vertebrae in a beluga’s neck is not fused together, allowing the creature to turn its head side-to-side and nod up and down.
  6. They can also swim backwards. This ability is quite unique among cetaceans. Their incredible maneuverability skills make up for their slow speeds of two to five miles per hour. But these whales can dive up to 800 meters in depth.
  7. They have plenty of blubber. Beluga whales have adapted to their arctic habitat by developing a thick layer of insulation. The blubber is 40% of their body weight.
