The animal kingdom is filled with creatures that display remarkable intelligence and cognitive abilities. It can be easy to underestimate the puzzling power of animals, but there are many creatures who possess incredible traits of intelligence. Here are three of the most intelligent animals found in the wild.

Dolphins

Dolphins are widely regarded as one of the most intelligent species on Earth, known for their complex social behaviors, sophisticated communication skills, and problem-solving abilities. These highly social marine mammals live in tight-knit groups called pods, where they engage in cooperative hunting, communication through a variety of vocalizations, and even display altruistic behavior towards injured or distressed individuals. Dolphins are capable of learning new tasks quickly, demonstrating self-awareness, and even understanding symbolic representations.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees, our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom, are renowned for their advanced cognitive abilities and complex social behaviors. These great apes exhibit a wide range of sophisticated behaviors, including tool use, problem-solving, and cultural transmission of knowledge and behaviors within their social groups. Chimpanzees are capable of using tools to obtain food, communicate through a variety of vocalizations and gestures, and even display empathy and compassion towards others.

Elephants

Elephants are among the largest and most intelligent land animals on Earth, known for their complex social structures, remarkable memory, and emotional intelligence. These majestic creatures live in tight-knit family groups led by matriarchs, who pass down knowledge and traditions to younger generations. Elephants demonstrate a range of sophisticated behaviors, including tool use, problem-solving, and communication through a variety of vocalizations, gestures, and body language.

“Everybody on the island knows Jojo. He’ll go underneath you and he’ll just cruise with you,” Wake to Wake told The Dodo. “He’ll look straight into your eyes. You can see there’s a little bit of confusion in his face looking over and seeing, like, ’How are you doing this with me?’”

Not only does Jojo adore humans, but he also befriends every dog he sees. One of them is Zyzz.

“When we started the business, he just seems to love coming up and interacting with us. Jojo definitely really likes playing with the dogs,” they added. “They [start] playing in the water together. I think they get on so well when they’re together ’cause they just wanna play.”

Fishermen and sea creatures are enemies by default, but things in Laguna, Brazil are a bit different. In this coastal area, the fishermen and dolphins have developed a close bond and they work together to catch mullet fish.

Their collaboration starts with bottlenose dolphins chasing the mullets towards the shore where fishers wait with nets in their hands. Since they can’t see the fish for themselves, fishermen watch the dolphins who give them a cue by slapping their heads or tails against the water to let them know when to cast the net. This breaks the fish shoals and makes the individual fishes an easy catch for the dolphins.

This intriguing alliance was first recorded in the 1980s, but it is believed that the origins of the relationship between dolphins and fishers go even further back.

You can see how this collaboration between fishermen and dolphins looks like and learn more about the story in the videos below.

Not only killer whales can communicate with each other, a new study has found that they can also learn “dolphin language”.

We know that most animals can communicate among their species with innate sounds, but species that can imitate new sounds and use them properly in social situations are not that common. This ability is called vocal learning and is a trait of humans, bats, some birds, and cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises).

According to a recent study, killer whales (Orcinus orca) are able to learn vocalizations from other species, such as dolphins. When socialized with dolphins, killer whales changed the type of sounds they made and started “talking dolphin” instead.

“There’s been an idea for a long time that killer whales learn their dialect, but it isn’t enough to say they all have different dialects so therefore they learn,” says study researcher Ann Bowles, a senior research scientist at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in Carlsbad, California. “There needs to be some experimental proof so you can say how well they learn and what context promotes learning.”

In 2017, a group of scientists discovered a new species – an animal that seemed to be a mix of dolphin and whale. Turns out, it’s actually a rare hybrid.

The new species was spotted swimming next to a melon-headed whale in Hawaii.

“Melon-headed whales have a very rounded head, and rough-toothed dolphins have a very long, gently sloping rostrum, or beak,” says Robin Baird, a researcher for Cascadia Research Collective. “Instead of having a rounded head like a melon-headed whale or the long, sloping rostrum of a rough-toothed dolphin, it had something in between. So it had a sloping rostrum, but a relatively short one.”

Melon-headed whales are not actually whales but belong to the dolphin family. Still, this is the first time that a melon-headed whale and a rough-toothed dolphin hybrid was spotted.

Intelligence is everywhere around us. Though humans have some obvious advantages over many animal species, that doesn’t mean that we’re the only ones intelligent on our planet. In fact, there are several members of the animal kingdom who have proven to have impressive cerebral skills and cognitive abilities.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are the closest animal relatives we humans have. The DNA similarity is incredible – according to biology, we’re 99% the same! One study that was published 10 years ago showed that chimps can even be better than humans in certain memory tests.

Goats

For a long time, scientists have suspected that goats are much smarter than we give them credit for. A test conducted in Australia showed that they are able to solve puzzles in order to get to food – nine out of 12 goats needed only four tries!

Elephants

It’s a common saying that elephants can memorize things for a long time. But did you know that they are able to distinguish among different languages?

Dolphins

Among some other things, dolphins can recognize themselves in the mirror.
