According to Zaycman, this technique also requires a lot of precision. “I studied math at university, and geometry and technical drawing at school,” she shared with the Etsy blog. “I appreciate the precision and clarity of exact sciences, and I like how they require perseverance and intense concentration.”

Having an understanding of geometry is useful in calculating complex shapes, while being practiced at technical drawing helps her achieve precision in my sketches. “I like them to be accurate, and I don’t eyeball anything, because it affects every other stage of production,” she notes.

Each piece begins with a detailed sketch. But most often than not, before sitting down to sketch a design, Zaycman already has an idea in mind. “While I’m sketching, the idea may stay the same, but it might also transform into something new,” she says. “Often I’ll come up with a completely new collection.”

And while shipments of her glass sculptures have temporarily stopped, until post-service returns to normal, you can still admire her work online, by following her Instagram account.

Chances are you’ve come across a Susie Ghahremani illustration without even knowing it. An award-winning illustrator and exhibiting artist, Ghahremani is also the designer and illustrator behind the popular and whimsically illustrated gift brand Boygirlparty. Consisting of more than 300 products, Boygirlparty can be found on shelves of independent boutiques and galleries as well as retailers such as Mod Cloth, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Nordstrom.

But though the products vary, the subject matter tends to center around the same theme: nature and animals. “Nature is always inspiring to me,” Ghahremani relayed once in an interview with Pikaland, “whether it’s a walk in the woods, or watching close-up as a ladybug purposefully climbs around a leaf. I always feel a surge of inspiration after spending time outdoors, especially if it’s a place I’ve never been before where I can tune in surprised at everything I see.”

Woodland critters, household pets, and other wild animals feature frequently in her work, commercial or otherwise. Her uniquely illustrated and functional paper goods are what Flavorpill calls “The indie, start-up version of Hello Kitty,” while BuzzFeed calls Boygirlparty “a shop you wish you knew about sooner.”

Based in San Diego, California with her husband and zillions of pets, Ghahremani also makes picture books which tend to feature, you’ve guessed it, animals. Her advice to other aspiring artists? “Know who you are & what your work feels like before you jump in! I see many young artists trying to follow in other established artists styles and what not, and it’s just very sad to see for all involved.”

If there’s one thing we love more than dogs is supporting small businesses that support dogs. This week we’re happy to feature Trotting Dog, a brand dedicated to funny Vizsla cards and personalized gifts.

Based in the Isle of Wight (a small island about 2 miles off the South Coast of England) Trotting Dog was founded in 2017 after Vizsla owner, Marianne, crowdfunded and self-published a children’s book featuring illustrations of her loveable pup.

“Last year I decided to do one of the things on my ‘life list’ and write a book!” Marianne further explained in an interview for the printed blog. “Vintage fashion and dogs are two of my passions so it seemed sensible to combine them.”

Having gained some traction through her book, Marianne then created some cards and postcards from the illustrations. “They became so popular with people that my business selling doggy cards and gifts began,” she explained.

Most of the brand is naturally dedicated to Vizsla dogs, but other breeds feature as well. “My dog collection is growing as I add more and more breeds which is very exciting,” says Marianne.

Show her and her pups some love on Instagram!

If there’s one thing we love more than dogs is supporting small businesses that support dogs. This week we’re happy to feature Trotting Dog, a brand dedicated to funny Vizsla cards and personalized gifts.
