Summer is just around the corner, and you’re probably already plotting your beach vacation, but it’s important to pay close attention to creatures lurking underwater.  Jellyfish can turn your tropical getaway into a painful ordeal, but our tips will help you avoid getting stung by them.

Right Place, Right Time

The best way to avoid jellyfish altogether is to be in the right place at the right time. Avoid swimming and diving in areas known to have many jellyfish, especially during peak season. You can even check a jellyfish forecast to avoid potential encounters that could turn dangerous.

Stay Alert

Even if you get informed about it before heading to the beach, it’s a good idea to stay alert when in areas with occasional jellyfish sightings. Keep an eye out for jellyfish in the water and on the shoreline, and don’t try to touch them or go anywhere near them to avoid the sting. It’s also a good idea to wear a protective suit and footwear while swimming.

First Aid Basics

Even if you take all the precautions, jellyfish stings can still occur so it’s good to know some first aid basics. Remove any remaining tentacles, rinse the sting with seawater or vinegar, soak the area in warm water for 30 minutes to release the toxins, and consider using painkillers and seeking medical assistance if you’re experiencing a strong reaction.

Some of you may not be fond of jellyfish, especially if you were “fortunate” enough to get stung by them. However, we assure you that Yuliya Kucherenko’s sea creatures won’t do you any harm. To depict her beautiful jellyfish embroideries, she uses various techniques, like thread painting, needle felting, and beading.

To achieve the three-dimensional look, Kucherenko layers several different colors of thread and attaches dozens of them to unfurl over the hoop’s boundary to make the jellyfish even more lifelike.

She also pays a lot of attention to the details as well as how she presents her creations. She uses layers of blue and green tulle to create enchanting ocean waves.

Although she doesn’t have a huge following, her work is definitely worth checking out. We really enjoyed browsing through her Instagram page and we believe that you will enjoy it, too. Follow her for future updates and check out her Etsy store where you can purchase her beautiful creations.

Ningaloo Reef in Australia is known for delivering ocean enthusiasts with beautiful sceneries that you can hardly come across anywhere in the world. Diver and underwater photographer, Prue Wheeler, can vouch for this as Ningaloo reef was the place where she managed to capture one of the most breathtaking videos of her career.

Wheeler was recently sailing on Ningaloo when she spotted something strange happening underwater. Puzzled by this, the 35-year-old diver decided to check it out. She put on diving gear and got into the water only to witness a once-in-a-lifetime sight.

As soon as Wheeler dived in, she became surrounded by thousands of moon jellyfish. These beautiful translucent ocean creatures didn’t mind the company and were freely swimming around allowing her to enjoy the scenery and even capture some of it on camera.

Check out the amazing footage captured by Wheeler below.

Biologist and wildlife presenter Lizzie Daly had the surprise of her life this past week as she encountered a human-sized jellyfish during one of her diving sessions.

Daly was exploring the waters near the coast of Cornwall, England on Saturday as part of her Wild Ocean Week campaign which serves as a celebration of the marine world and also raises funds for the Marine Conservation Society. This was when she spotted a Barrel jellyfish, which is the largest species of jellyfish that can be found in British waters.

And while Barrel Jellyfish are usually 3.2 feet long and weigh up to 55 lbs, the one Daly saw was the size of a full-grown human.

“What an unforgettable experience,” – said Daly about the experience. “I know barrel jellyfish get really big in size, but I have never seen anything like it before!”

Fortunately for all marine lovers, Daly was in the company of videographer Dan Abbott, who managed to capture her encounter with this impressive sea creature on camera. Check out the clip below.
