]]>In its essence, hibernation is a survival strategy where metabolism is reduced to a minimum, breathing becomes shallow, and body temperature plummets. It’s meant to allow animals to conserve energy during particularly cold periods or when food is scarce. During the hibernation period, animals survive relying solely on stored fat reserves.
One of the most amazing aspects of hibernation is how minimal animals’ bodily functions can get without them dying as a result. The average body temperature of a hibernating animal is around 32° F, which is as close to death as it gets, and its heart rate is so slow that it’s nearly unnoticeable.
While many associate hibernation solely with mammals, a diverse array of creatures, including reptiles, insects, and even bees, partake in this seasonal dormancy. However, bears do stand out as the quintessential hibernators.
One of the key challenges faced by modern hibernators is us humans. Practices like factory farming and deforestation disrupt some hibernation habitats, jeopardizing nature’s balance.

After finishing their studies, they began collaborating on various art pieces, got married, and launched A Nature Unknown, “a personal illustration series inspired by their shared interests in the outdoors, the unexplained, and introversion.”
Although they don’t have a big following, their art is definitely worth checking out. We really enjoyed browsing through their Instagram page and we believe that you will enjoy it, too.

I try and capture different moments in time at a specific location to allow us to experience some times that have past us,” the artist shared with Bored Panda and added that although he mostly does his work digitally, he still likes to create paintings as well.
His latest series titled Melting Alaskan Glaciers depicts climate changes that happened since the last century. Richards is offering his images for free-use for those who need to communicate about climate issues.

]]>The monarch butterfly is the insect species with the longest migration trajectory, which is incredible by itself. The side-effect that happens due to the migration is just icing on the cake.
The butterflies stay in Mexico for 4-5 months, completely covering the oak, pine, and oyamel trees. They spend the cold mornings in clusters and they’re not really visible, but as soon as it gets warm, they open their orange-black wings wide and fly around, creating a magical sight.
The forest offers the butterflies everything they need to reproduce: the perfect temperature, clear streams, and silence. People can visit the forest, but they should stay quiet to not disturb the butterflies.

]]>With many years designing and maintaining gardens, Morin’s love for flora and fauna grew strong. And having studied painting and art history at Massachusetts College of Art, it was only natural that she showcased her love of nature throughout her artwork.
“My paintings are an attempt at finding a balance within the complexities and subtleties of nature using texture, pattern, and narrative elements throughout,” Morin wrote on her personal website. “Through my travels, I continue to seek out inspiration from the natural world while honing in on the unique details that define each place.”
Her artworks range from elaborate watercolor and gouache compositions on paper to vast and more layered paintings on canvas. But whatever the case may be, her creations are sure to add a pop of summer to your feed.

]]>“Here is something you don’t see every day: a #baldeagle and a red #fox fighting over a rabbit — and at times more than 20 feet up into the air. It happened Saturday at #SanJuanIsland National Historical Park. The fox caught the rabbit and the eagle tried to steal it away. See the whole sequence of images and hear the story on my blog at LivingWilderness.com. Click blog. It was absolutely incredible to see. The whole battle lasted just eight seconds. The fox ended up OK, but lost its dinner,” Ebi wrote along the photo he posted on Instagram.
He wrote about it in more detail on his blog, livingwilderness, where you can also see more pictures.
The awesome scene was also captured on video by Zachary Hartje and you can check it out below.

]]>The conditions that make living in the Arctic so harsh also prevent the trees from surviving there. And even though trees produce oxygen through a process known as photosynthesis, they are not its main producers. 50 to 80% of oxygen actually comes from phytoplankton, microscopic single-celled organisms.
That explains why we can breathe normally on the open sea, in the Arctic, and other regions without a single tree to be seen.

Life is not easy for bee hummingbirds, as they have to compete with some insects for food. Because of that, they have developed incredible skill and speed. Their wings beat 200 times in a second, compared to other hummingbirds and their speed of around 80 beats per second.
The bee hummingbirds have many natural enemies, including larger birds, fish, and frogs. And while the predators can be scary, they are furthermore threatened by deforestation and habitat loss.
