]]>Donut the Pigeon was adopted by his owner in July 2022, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. He became a huge sensation thanks to his picture-perfect white feathers and adorable personality, which shines brightly in every funny clip his owner shares with the world.
Like most domestic pigeons, Donut most likely descended from the wild rock pigeon or rock doves. Judging by his color, he’s most likely a King pigeon, which are instantly recognizable thanks to their distinctive white color, since they’re descendants of rock doves.
Even though it’s not common to keep pigeons as pets, they can be a great choice for the right person and offer many benefits when compared to more popular domesticated bird species, such as parrots.
“Pigeons are highly intelligent and social animals that form strong bonds with their owners, making them excellent companions. Additionally, pigeons have a calm and peaceful demeanor that can be very soothing and relaxing to be around,” Donuts’ owner explained on his Instagram page.

]]>Only three bird species on Earth produce milk, and pigeons are one of them. Pigeon milk comes from the lining of their crop and is produced by both males and females. It is high in protein and fat while being vital for the growth of chicks.
Pigeons have a great sense of navigation, which is why they were so efficient in their job as messengers. They can travel some 1,300 miles away from home and still find their way back. This will be the case even if they have been transported to an unknown location in isolation. Scientists believe that they are able to do so by using the position of the sun as a compass alongside other methods like memorizing landmarks.
Pigeons have been closely tied to humans for thousands of years. Experts believe that the domestication of pigeons dates back to 4500 BCE and that they might be the first birds to be domesticated by humans.
As we previously mentioned, pigeons can remember important landmarks and later use them as a navigational tool. But their memory is even more remarkable than that. Studies have shown that pigeons can recognize humans they’ve seen before and tell them apart from one another even after a change of clothes.

]]>But that’s not all! Believe it or not, you can make a pigeon to wear pigeon pants! Can you imagine a bird in a tuxedo? Neither can we!
Rugge shared a video on his YouTube channel titled Why Pigeons Make Great Pets, where he introduced his girlfriend’s white-feathered boy called Coo-per. After listing some of the main reasons why you should consider adopting a pigeon, he said that besides parrots, pigeons can wear pants.
“You can get a variety of different types of pants for pigeons. We actually have a really nice array of pigeon pants,” he said.
“They are really cute and it is nice that you can put a liner in the pants, so the pigeon will poop in the pants, and you can just change out the liner,” Rugge continued. “It is actually really very sanitary because there’s a pouch that the poop falls down into, so it’s not going to be touching your bird.”

]]>Professor Shigeru Watanabe from Keio University studied what happens when pigeons face artwork for years. In his 1995 study, he showed pigeons paintings by Monet and Picasso. They were trained to peck whenever they saw these paintings, and it turned out the birds are able to tell the difference between these artists. Not only that, but they were also able to generalize the difference in style and apply it to other artists.
But what about good and bad art?
Professor Watanabe, along with students and professors from his university, determined if specific artworks were “good” or “bad” for the purpose of this research. Once the pigeons learned which pieces were good and which were bad, they had no problems categorizing new pieces they had never seen before.

]]>Back in the 1990s, an experiment was conducted to see if monkeys can learn operations more complicated than simple counting. The monkeys showed they can rank the items from the lowest number to the highest and were equally successful when given an unfamiliar number on the test. Once they learned that 2 was more than 1 and 3 higher than 2, they were able to conclude the relations between other numbers, too.
A scientist from New Zealand, Damian Scarf, tried to do the same with pigeons. He found that the birds can learn how to rank shapes and arrange the numbers in order.
The training was limited to one-digit numbers, but it’s still pretty impressive.
