]]>According to the zoo’s post, these are the first two polar bear cubs born in Toledo Zoo since 2012. The parents of the cubs are a 24-year-old female named Crystal and an 18-year-old male named Nuka. As part of the announcement, the zoo shared a video of Crystal with the twins, whose gender still remains unknown.
“Mom is doing everything she should do, and the cubs are warm and happy in their den,” said Toledo Zoo’s senior zookeeper Michael Frushour in the video.
The public will have to wait a while before seeing the adorable cubs in person. According to the Toledo Zoo, the twins will be introduced to the world in the spring of 2023. But until then, everyone can get to know them thanks to a YouTube live stream from Crystal’s den.
“The bears are off-exhibit inside their cozy den as it is a quiet, safe place for a mother to give birth and raise cubs,” Toledo Zoo explained. “In the wild, this would be on a snow bank or side of a hill. Nuka will remain on exhibit daily at Arctic Encounter.”

]]>His latest adventure took him to Northern Canada in a town called Churchill, also known as the “polar bear capital of the world.” He spent some intimate time with these huge white animals in their natural habitat. The polar bears situated in northern Manitoba spend many months on the Hudson Bay, waiting for the ice to freeze over at the beginning of the hunting season.
Churchill Wild, the only operator who offers up close and personal experience with polar bears, offered Turner this once in a lifetime opportunity, making his ultimate wildlife dream a reality.
Turner opened up to My Modern Met about his incredible journey with these majestic animals. “It was the intimacy that struck me. In such a silent world—snow snuffles out sound—the stillness creates a magical, ethereal feeling to the air. Photographically, it’s a dream. The crisp, cool air results in super sharp images, with the light interacting with every single snowflake.”
And the most memorable moment was “The first encounter, without a doubt. With the magical Arctic sunset came our first bear, a subadult male. Coming out of the willow bushes, he laid down on the frozen river, directly facing us. My first 10 shots were blurry, as I was shaking with pure excitement. His stare was incredibly intense; he was looking at me.”
It's an injustice to describe these encounters with words. In fact, it's near impossible. The way that ethereal light filled the air, the sharp cold on my skin and of course, this beautiful, beautiful animal. Just by looking at this image, I feel it all over again.
