Many animal species look so much alike that it’s pretty common to mistake them for each other. Sea lions and seals are a case in point, and our brief guide will help you spot key differences that set these fascinating marine mammals apart.

Physical Differences

When trying to spot a physical difference between sea lions and seals, pay close attention to their ears and flippers. Unlike seals, sea lions have external ear flaps, while their front flippers make it easier to walk, even on dry land.

Different Movements

Speaking of walking on land, sea lions are pretty skillful in this arena, rotating their hind flippers to walk, while seals are more proficient when it comes to swimming and don’t do so well on land.

Noise Levels

Both seals and sea lions are pretty vocal animals, but not to the same extent. Sea lions are tremendously noisy, while seals are more prone to making quieter noises and vocalizing via soft grunts.

Social Behavior

Unlike seals, sea lions are highly social creatures, often found in large colonies including hundreds of individuals. That’s not the case with seals because they tend to be more solitary in nature, only forming small groups or pairs during breeding season.

Seals are friendly and curious marine animals with joyful personalities. In honor of these adorable creatures, we decided to help you get more familiar with them and share some fun facts you probably didn’t know. Let’s check them out.

Seals Can Spend 2 Hours Underwater

Seals are expert divers. Most seal species can spend around 30 minutes underwater without much effort, while some species, like elephant seals, can stay beneath the surface for two hours. Their ability to store oxygen in their muscles helps them do this.

Earless Seals Have Ears

There are several seal species, referred to as earless seals, which look like they don’t have ears. But despite their name and look, they do have ears. Their ears are just hidden under their fur and don’t have an auricle aka exterior part of the ear.

Mother Seal and Baby Seal Can Recognize Each Other’s Voice

The bond between the mother seal and the baby seal is really strong. The two start recognizing each other’s voice several hours after birth with the help of a distinct call. Studies have shown that they are able to do so even after years of separation.

Seals Are Not Too Picky About Sleeping Spots

Seals have a cool ability to sleep both on water, beneath the surface of the water, and on land. When they sleep on water, they float on the surface and just have their snout out. They are also known to dive and glide through water or just snooze on the ocean floor. When they are on land, they simply find a cozy spot, get comfy, and travel to the land of dreams.

Namibia-based Naude Dreyer, the founder of a kayak tour company called Pelican Point, together with his team of guides, disentangles seals captured in fishing lines, nets, and packaging straps.

“Our seals are getting entangled in this ocean rubbish, eventually causing a painful death,” Dreyer shared with Go Get Funding where he started a fundraising campaign to help these animals. “My team of guides and myself have committed ourselves to catching and these animals to give them a second chance. Last year, we caught and released over 300 animals.”

Dreyer shares videos of rescues on his Instagram account and with the money he collects, he wants to buy more specialized equipment to help seals, such as industrial scissors, custom made nets, handling equipment, and a tag monitoring system.

“We also need to raise awareness within the fishing industry to implement change and educate our local fishermen to stop dumping trash overboard,” he added.
