]]>Reid’s Whispering Willows Senior Sanctuary takes care of senior dogs that have been abandoned by their owners or whose owners have passed away. The place gives dogs food, a roof over their heads, a big backyard to play in, and provides a regular medical checkup by a team of veterinarians. This allows them to spend their twilight years with a smile on their face.
“They just get to be here and get to be home,” Reid explained in a recent chat with Daily Paws.
According to Reid, she got the idea for the sanctuary after her father’s death. Her mom couldn’t take care of their dog Stanley due to poor health while she reached the city’s limits for pets. They eventually managed to find a foster home for Stanley, but this got Reid thinking about all the dogs that are not so lucky.
After some time, Reid and her family bought a home with a big surrounding land in Missouri and obtained a shelter permit. They focused on helping just elderly dogs as they are less likely to be adopted if they end up in other types of rescue facilities. Since then, they have provided a home to more than 800 dogs and intend to do so for many more in the future.
“Love never dies. Losing them can be hard, but then there is always another senior death that needs our help just as badly,” Reid shared with My Modern Met. “We pour our grief and love into the next soul, making it truly a mission of love.”

]]>TikTok user @emyzee recently shared a video on TikTok showing a senior dog named Toby refusing to get help while climbing the stairs. The clip quickly went viral, reaching 1.4 million views in a week, with social media users obviously loving Toby’s persistence.
In the video, Toby, who lives in a senior pet sanctuary, can be seen having trouble climbing the stairs because “he messed up his leg.” When @emyzee tries to help him, he barks, letting her know that he can do it by himself.
@emyzee still decides to give a slight push to Toby to get him over the final stairs, but the dog doesn’t even acknowledge her help. Instead, he simply walks away.
“He has a messed up leg and has trouble getting up the stairs but GOD FORBID i help him,” @emyzee explains in the caption.
@emyzee later explained in the comments section that Toby arrived in the sanctuary with a bad leg. They believe it was broken at some point and never got fixed.
Still, it seems like Toby isn’t letting a “messed up” leg prevent him from being independent, and we applaud his determination.

]]>“Since aging is known to be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, we are keen to investigate the genetic background of aging,” Dávid Jónás, the lead author of the study and the researcher at the Department of Ethology at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary told This Dog’s Life.
“It is worth mentioning that the genetic factors contributing to aging are of special interest when compared to the environmental factors (e.g. nutrition, healthcare, or physical activity), since the former ones cannot be changed as quickly and efficiently as the latter.”
Jónás and his team analyzed the DNA sequences of two dogs aged 22 and 27. They discovered mutations not noticed in dogs with an average life span. The senior dogs had longevity genes linked to cell death regulation, blood pressure regulation, and nervous system development.
The team is currently looking for six to eight more dogs who’ve reached a certain old age. You can visit their project if you happen to have an elderly dog that fits the criteria.
