Helping animals doesn’t take much effort, but it can mean a difference between life and death for them. Sometimes, a simple call to animal rescuers is enough to do the trick, but one Pennsylvania native was willing to do even more for a skunk mother in distress.

In a recent Facebook post, animal organization Raven Ridge Wildlife Center from Washington Boro, Pennsylvania, shared a story about how a woman named Laura helped save a skunk that had its head stuck in a can.

As soon as she noticed the skunk in her driveway, Laura placed a call to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. Worried that the skunk might get away before the help came, staff told her to try and capture it. Laura obliged, getting creative and trapping the animal in a clothes basket.

After the skunk made its way to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, the veterinarians sedated it and removed the can. During a checkup, they discovered that the skunk gave birth to babies recently and needed to be reunited with them as soon as possible.

“Laura was more than happy to help, and we quickly got the skunk back to her home the same day she was admitted. As she ran towards the tree line, we knew she knew exactly where she was,” Raven Ridge Wildlife Center wrote in the Facebook post.

In the summer of 2017, a tiny orphaned skunk followed Nikki home. Her siblings were nowhere to be found, and the woman thought she needed help. Thanks to Nikki, the skunk is now celebrating her 5th birthday this year.

Fannie is into stuffed toys and balls and likes collecting things around the house. She also loves playing with her mom and only trusts her. For the last five years, Nikki wasn’t sprayed once.

“Skunks are misunderstood. People, you know, sometimes they think they are a nuisance, but they are really not. If they trust their human and they trust you, they won’t ever spray, and she never did,” she told The Dodo.

Although Nikki loved having Fannie around, she knew that she couldn’t keep her. The little skunk was released the following spring.

“I kind of had faith that if I let her go, she knew that she could come back to her little house and be safe. I probably see her three or four times a week,” Nikki added.

She usually has cheese puffs with her, which are Fannie’s favorite snack. Who would have thought skunks are amazing animals, right?

Bird Dogg describes himself as a professional musician, freelance writer, and relic hunter from Virginia, who lives in the mountains of Tennessee. One day, when he was kayaking, he found two abandoned baby skunks.

“While out hunting for river treasure with some friends I came across two baby skunks that needed a helping hand,” Bird Dog shared on his YouTube channel. “I looked for their mother, but was unable to find her and given their proximity to the river, the oncoming weather and their utter helplessness, I did the only thing I knew to do…. Save them.”

He took the babies home and bottle-fed them every couple of hours. The next day he took them to the local Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

“Wildlife is so important,” he added. “and I wish more people would take the time to realize that, so take the time to appreciate the wildlife around you, and if you ever see an animal truly in distress, as these skunks were, do what you do to save them.”

Recently, officers from the Sebastopol Police Department were called out to assist a daring rescue at a local skate park.

They found out that a skunk had slipped down the slopes of the park’s bowl and was left stuck overnight. Since catching a scared skunk would definitely provoke him to use his defensive spray, officers decided to find other ways and they got a creative idea.

The rescuers built like a ladder from some pallets stored in some of the park employees’ truck and after seeing the ladder, the skunk realized this was his ticket out. With guidance from the rescuers, the lone animal eventually made his way up to the ramp and left the park on its own accord.

Recently, a skunk in Billerica, Massachusetts, was out looking for food but ended up stuck somewhere.

When the little creature saw a beer can, he became curious about the smell, so he stuck his nose inside and got his entire head stuck in the process.

No one knows how long he’s been stuck in the metal can but fortunately, people found the little skunk in time before he got too weak from not being able to eat.

The staff at Tufts Wildlife Center in North Grafton, had to sedate the skunk to remove the can and took care of the animal before returning him to the wild. This cute creature was lucky to be rescued because there are animals who gtt trapped in garbage that were not saved. Litter cans can be fatal for animals who put their heads inside while looking for food.

So when recycling, make sure to put the lid on all containers, wash jars out so there are no food smells and smash flexible containers so no wildlife can get their head stuck inside.
