]]>Orlans grew up in Jupiter, Florida, and she always saw this small town as a perfect place for beachcombing. This hobby has followed her since her early days, and she used to collect everything from sea glass to shark teeth before settling on empty snail shells.
Painting on snail shells is quite a process for Orlans, who collects them along the banks of the rivers and lakes. She then boils them clean and scrubs them with soap, and it can take her up to six hours to paint over them. She uses resin for glossiness and strength, before decorating the shells with pearls, studs, or rhinestones.
Nature is the main driving force behind her work, and she’s mostly inspired by “graceful lines and colors that can be found in a sunset, a shell, a butterfly wing, or the leaf of a fern”, as she told Beach Combing Magazine.
Painting empty snail shells started as a hobby, but Orlans managed to transform her passion into a small business, and she’s selling her pieces on her Etsy page Rocky Road Art Studio.

“It is a really fun challenge for us to come up with these scenes and to find different ways to execute it so it feels believable and lived in, despite its fabrication,” Murawski told Colossal. “We are always looking for new ways to construct different elements in a scene and trying varied techniques to create depth and motion in our work.”
They let the snails enjoy their new environments, while the artistic duo snaps images or creates short but hilarious videos of their pets. They share their creations on Instagram where they have attracted almost 200,000 followers.

As the Florida Department of Agriculture announced, “This is not science fiction. This is real.” These snails feed on around 500 types of plants, so it’s fair to say they’d eat “almost anything,” as described by Daniel Benjamin, public information officer for the Florida Department of Agriculture’s Division of Plant Industry, and reported by The Dodo.
“When it was at its peak, we’d find marks on the sides of houses where the snails had been eating the stucco,” said Benjamin. “Stucco contains calcium, which the snails consume to keep their shells healthy.”
In some parts of the world, people keep them as pets. This is illegal in the U.S., though. The giant snails can live up to 10 years in the wild and around five or six years in captivity.

]]>Slugs and snails actually both belong to the same class called gastropods. The name of the class comes from the Greek words gastros, meaning stomach, and podos, meaning foot. Appropriate, don’t you think?
While most gastropods live in water, snails and slugs are the only ones that can also live on the ground. The most obvious difference between these two species is that nails have shells on their back, while slugs don’t.
Other differences include habitat and behavior, but they are largely affected by the fact that snails have shells and slugs don’t. That’s why slugs can fit into narrow places and snails can’t.
