Whale strandings are a dangerous phenomenon that often leads to their death, but disaster was partially diverted during a recent whale beaching in Western Australia. Around 160 pilot whales were stranded on the Australian coast, but the majority of them managed to return to the ocean.

The whale beaching took place in the coastal town of Dunsborough, and hundreds of volunteers rushed to the rescue. According to the Department of Parks and Wildlife Service Western Australia, around 160 pilot whales were stranded ashore and around 130 were eventually returned to the sea.

Ian Wiese, the chair of the Geographe Marine Research group, was one of the volunteers leading the rescue, and things eventually turned out better than expected.

“My initial reaction seeing hundreds of whales all bunched (together) on the beach was just completely and utterly overwhelming. It was really, really chaotic. However, the final result was good news – as often with these events, it is only possible to save a few,” Weise told CNN.

Whale strandings often turn out deadly due to whales dying of dehydration, drowning when high tide covers the blowhole, or even collapsing under their own weight. There’s still no clear explanation for mass whale beachings, but it’s been connected to bad weather conditions, navigation errors, environmental factors, and most frequently the effects of mid-frequency active sonar.

Russian artist Anastasia Ablogina is best known for her beautiful textured palette knife paintings depicting the animal kingdom. However, while browsing through her Instagram gallery, where she currently has more than 23,000 followers, the artist mostly focuses on capturing the majestic beauty of whales.

Using vibrant colors and heavy brush strokes, Ablogina depicts her sea creatures in their natural habitat, capturing the soul and movement of these aquatic mammals. Besides whales, in her portfolio, you can find images of other animals, including owls, turtles, bears, birds, etc.

“Walking creatively means constantly succumbing to self-criticism, self-expression, and self-awareness, wandering about your memories, dreams, the world (whether it’s real or not), yielding to your imagination and being able to return from there with the baggage of the unreal,” the artist shared on her Instagram page explaining what art means for her.

We really enjoyed browsing through her Instagram page and we believe that you will enjoy it, too. Follow her for future updates.

In 2017, a group of scientists discovered a new species – an animal that seemed to be a mix of dolphin and whale. Turns out, it’s actually a rare hybrid.

The new species was spotted swimming next to a melon-headed whale in Hawaii.

“Melon-headed whales have a very rounded head, and rough-toothed dolphins have a very long, gently sloping rostrum, or beak,” says Robin Baird, a researcher for Cascadia Research Collective. “Instead of having a rounded head like a melon-headed whale or the long, sloping rostrum of a rough-toothed dolphin, it had something in between. So it had a sloping rostrum, but a relatively short one.”

Melon-headed whales are not actually whales but belong to the dolphin family. Still, this is the first time that a melon-headed whale and a rough-toothed dolphin hybrid was spotted.

The Spanish government is creating a marine wildlife reserve in the Mediterranean Sea that will be the home of migrating whales and dolphins. Fossil fuel searching will be prohibited in the area.

The protected reserve will spread over nearly 18,000 square miles. As the government announced, the area “is of great ecological value and represents a migration path of vital importance for cetaceans in the Western Mediterranean.”

Spain’s minister for ecological transition, Teresa Ribera, says that “this is the end of new prospecting or any type of extraction of fossil fuels” in the protected area.

Spain hopes to protect species like Fin whales, pilot whales, sperm whales, striped dolphins, and more.
