These Super Dogs Flying Though Colorful Clouds of Powder are Amazing

While most animal photographers aim to overwhelm the viewers with “curtness” of their dog photographs, Ontario-based photographer Jess Bell decided to take a different route. In her latest series of photographs, she wanted to represent dogs as “super” creatures that look like they came straight out of some sci-fi movie.

The way Bell managed to achieve this effect is by having dogs jump through colorful clouds of powder and then snapping the photo at the right moment. The result were amazing photos that seem like they were engineered with some photo-manipulation software. But that isn’t the case.

“These crazy colors and dynamic swirls are captured in-camera in real time and on location,” – explains Bell. “As a result, every single image is unique and highlights the amazing differences between how dogs of various breeds and body shapes move. The powder acts as a perfect action amplification device.”

You can check out photos of these “super dogs,” that still managed to keep their cute look, below.

S L I C E Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever © Jess Bell Photography Owner: Chelsey Protulipac For this photo, I just lit Slice on fire and pointed her at a jump. (Hah. Okay, maybe not. But I LOVE how the orange powder billows off dogs like flames.) Slice is an enormously talented young Toller. She has her MOTCH (master obedience trial championship) in the CKC which she earned last year. She has 13 High in Trial wins and many High in Class wins from her obedience competitions. And the best part? Her training was done via shaping & clicker training. This is my kinda training! — My holi agility photos are now available to clients! And holi isn't just for agility, but disc, bite sports, fetch and more. Contact me for personalized sessions or if you're interested in arranging something for a group/club. I wanted to make sure that anyone who has enjoyed my recent coloured powder photographs knew about Andrea Zachrau. She's the progenitor of the style. Please go check her out and give her and her gorgeous work some love. <3 https://www.facebook.com/aztierfotografie @andreazachrau_photography Share if you like! C O H E N © Jess Bell Photography Owner: Me! Jess Bell You know the saying, "the shoemaker's children go barefoot"? That's how I feel sometimes when it comes to photos of my own girl, Cohen. I find it really tough to take photos of her because I rarely have help to handle her while I hide behind my lens. Not to mention, I'm pretty choosy when it comes to photos of her so simple snaps rarely do it for me. But not today! Many thanks to the wonderful participants who came out to my holi agility photo shoot this weekend. Not only did they help me set up/tear down my equipment in record time, but they helped handle my crazy girl so I could take a few photos. This photo is definitely going to be printed on metal and hung in my studio! (Let's sort of ignore her not-exactly ideal jumping form compared to the other attendees. 😅 It's been a while since we practiced.) I'm not surprised that some people think that the powder is added in post-production. But this effect is captured in-camera and on-set! — My holi agility photos are now available to clients!
