This Woman Founded a Rescue to Help Starving Flamingos

Bonaire Wild Bird Rehab, based in Bonaire, The Netherlands and founded by Elly Albers, rescues flamingos.

“The first thing I did when I came on this island was starting an animal shelter because there was no shelter,” Albers told The Dodo. “More and more flamingos are found starving and no one knows why but this woman spends every single day making sure no one goes hungry.”

Her day starts at 7 o’clock when it is time to give the flamingos their breakfast. Some of them are just there to eat, whilst others love to hang out all day at the Rehab. Together with the help of her volunteer team, Albers manages to properly take care of the birds.

“It’s also nice to see that there are many people in the world who love animals, who have passion and empathy. And do wanna put efforts in,” she added.

When the birds are ready, they are released on the coves where the breeding grounds are.
