Most people consider themselves lucky enough even if they just get a chance to spot a manatee in the water. But paddleboarder Ned Johnson from Orlando, Florida, was fortunate enough to meet one up close recently.
In a video shared on TikTok by Paddleboard Orlando, a manatee can be seen approaching Johnson to say hello. The marine mammal leans on Johnson’s paddleboard, fools around a bit, and then swims away.
The video got a lot of attention on social media, with other TikTokers sharing their fascination with the manatee in the comments section.
“I know we’re not allowed to pet them, but they WOULD LOVE THE PETS,” one TikToker wrote.
“The little toe nails! I just wish manatees knew how much we love them,” another added.
The reason why most people don’t get to experience what Johnson experienced is because federal laws make it illegal for humans to disturb manatees in any way. This means that you can’t feed them or seek contact with them, among other things.
However, it isn’t illegal to admire their beauty if they decide to approach you as they approached Johnson. But manatees are picky about whom they approach, so don’t get your hopes high next time you spot one.
