A Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoise gave birth to four babies at the Philadelphia Zoo, making history along the way. The 97-year-old tortoise named Mommy finally lived up to her name after becoming the oldest first-time mom of her species when she gave birth to four babies.

The 97-year-old Mommy and her 96-year-old partner Abrazzo are the two oldest animals at the Philadelphia Zoo, and they’re finally proud parents of four babies. The four hatchlings are presumed to be female, and they might be joined by more siblings because several of Mommy’s eggs still remain unhatched.

Lauren Augustine, the Philadelphia Zoo’s director of herpetology and birds, considers the birth of four babies a historic moment, considering how genetically valuable their species is.

“Mommy is considered one of the most genetically valuable Galapagos tortoises in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP)… With their ages and the fact that Mommy is so genetically valuable being a wild animal, this is such a huge success and accomplishment,” Augustine told The Washington Post.

The four hatchlings are currently being taken care of at the Reptile and Amphibian House, and they’ll make their first public appearance on April 23 – the 93rd anniversary of Mommy’s arrival at the Philadelphia Zoo.

The goldfish aren’t supposed to live in the wild, and pretty risky things can happen when they’re released into ponds, lakes, and rivers. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently warned about the dangers of releasing goldfish in the wild after a gigantic “megalodon” fish was found in Pennsylvania waters.

Goldfish are usually kept as pets, but some people may feel tempted to release them once they’re no longer able to take care of them. This may seem like the kindest thing to do, but it’s a huge no-no because goldfish are secretly an extremely invasive species that can cause harm to native fish when released in the wild.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) warned about the dangers of leaving a pet goldfish in the wild after a “megalodon” goldfish was found in a Presque Isle State Park waterway.

“This goldfish isn’t supposed to be here. But someone released it, thinking they were being kind. Instead, they created an invasive problem that can last decades. Goldfish grow massive in the wild, where they can turn lakes and waterways into murky messes, steal food from native fish, and wreck water quality,” reads USFWS’s Facebook post.

Instead of letting your goldfish loose if you can’t keep it, you should consider re-homing it, returning it to a pet store, or contacting local aquariums and rescue groups to check if they can take it in. Goldfish released in the wild grow and breed quickly, in addition to potentially spreading disease and disrupting water quality, making it harder for native populations to survive.

Kangaroos and wallaroos are both native to Australia and members of a larger macropod family. It’s easy to mix them up at first because they share countless similarities, but there are many things that set them apart. Here are five main differences that will help you see what makes both of these species unique.

Size

The main difference between wallaroos and kangaroos is their size. Wallaroos usually reach the size of around 5 feet and weigh around 120 pounds, so they’re much smaller than some of the larger kangaroo species, such as red kangaroos.

Physical Characteristics

In addition to their size, there are many other physical characteristics that set these animals apart. Kangaroos tend to have a more slender body and smaller front limbs when compared to wallaroos.

Movements

Despite both having pretty large feet, the way kangaroos and wallaroos move is quite different. Wallaroos jump more upright compared to kangaroos because their legs are much shorter.

Habitat

Kangaroos and wallaroos tend to inhabit different natural habitats. Kangaroos can mostly be found in the open grasslands and woodlands, while wallaroos prefer mountains, hillsides, and tropical forests.

Behavior

In terms of behavior and lifestyle, wallaroos aren’t as social as kangaroos. While kangaroos live in large groups called mobs, counting between 10 and 100 members, wallaroos are mostly solitary, with the exception of antilopine wallaroos.

The animal world is filled with countless tiny wonders and unexpected friendships that we’ve never seen coming. One of those friendships was formed between Tilly G the Tortoise and the adorable puppy named Skippy, who found viral fame by each other’s side after becoming BFFs.

With 440,000 followers under her belt, Tilly is one of the most popular tortoises on Instagram, in addition to having an impressive following across several other social media platforms. She didn’t have to embark on this journey of her own because her owners welcomed many more rescue animals into their home.

Tilly may be the only tortoise around, but she has several four-legged companions, including five cats and four dogs. After seeing what an amazing bond they formed, Tilly’s owners decided to share their pets’ adventures on social media in an attempt to spread love and pawsitivity.

Tilly gets on well with all the cats and dogs in the household, but the adorable pup named Skippy is definitely her BFF. They grew up by each other’s side, and they enjoy snacking, napping, and playing together, always sharing their favorite toys. In addition to being the stars of countless viral videos on Instagram, Tilly and Skippy’s story was also captured in the children’s book Tilly G The Tortoise & Skippy, written by Karen Sisneros and illustrated by Nadia Ronquillo.

When rescue cat Rocky first walked into Dawn Firestone’s life, the vet suggested euthanasia because he was in such bad shape. Firestone wasn’t giving up on him, and Rocky is still by her side five years later, living his best life despite all the obstacles he faced along the way.

Firestone stumbled upon Rocky while her husband Ben was working at a job site in a port near Newark, New Jersey. He saw a cat climb onto a machine and accidentally drop her baby 15 feet onto a concrete floor, causing major injuries that would leave Rocky paralyzed for life.

Firestone immediately picked up Rocky and took him to the vet, where she was told it’s probably best to euthanize him because he’ll never walk again. She was determined to give him the best life possible despite the vet’s suggestion and took him to physical therapy, acupuncture, and water therapy, before buying a tiny wheelchair with his name.

“When I first encountered Rocky, I had never seen a paralyzed cat. I was active on social media, but I hadn’t come across anything like it — no cat in a diaper, nothing. My love for Rocky led me to refuse euthanasia. Because I stood firm in that decision, five years later, he’s still with us,” Firestone told People.

She also shared his story on Instagram and TikTok under the moniker Rocky on Wheels, inspiring countless people to give paralyzed animals another chance at life.

Wesley Swainston is an active-duty Marine whose life took an unexpected turn when he decided to volunteer at a local dog shelter. He started going on daily runs with rescue dogs, and his videos blew up online once he started sharing them on social media in an attempt to help these pups find a loving home.

Swainston is a huge dog lover, who has two pets of his own, and he decided to contribute to his local community by volunteering at the local animal shelter Adoption First near Jacksonville, Florida, He started training dogs and showcasing their personalities online in the hope this would help them get adopted – and he definitely succeeded.

Swainston’s videos blew up when he started talking the dogs along on his daily runs, especially the one where trains for a marathon by running 26 miles, each with a different rescue dog.

“This approach not only provided them with physical exercise but also helped more fearful dogs open up. I would often bring fellow Marines to volunteer with me, allowing them to play and run with the dogs, which was a rewarding experience for everyone involved,” he told People.

Swainston hopes his videos will inspire others to adopt rescue dogs and volunteer at their local animal shelters because they need all the help they can get.

Many adorable animals found viral fame on social media in recent years, but none won us over in the way Moo Deng managed to. She’s a baby pigmy hippo from the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, and her adorable videos are taking the internet by storm.

Moo Deng was born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo back in July, and it was instantly clear she was destined for great things. The zoo started an online poll asking the visitors to choose the name for their latest little resident, and Moo Deng aka “bouncy pork” emerged as the top choice after receiving over 20,000 votes.

After winning over the visitors of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Moo Deng became a global sensation after zookeepers started capturing her shenanigans on camera. Viral videos that show her eating, climbing, and nipping on zookeepers attracted millions of views on social media, prompting the zoo to start a 24/7 live stream for this adorable hippo.

Moo Deng seems to be everywhere these days, and we’ve seen her get her own crypto coin, a Saturday Night Live sketch, and countless pieces of fun art. It also increased the number of visitors at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, but the officials decided to introduce a strict set of rules to protect Moo Deng from harassment and keep her safe.

Ocean harbors many secrets, and a large part of it still remains unexplored. Many species inhabiting the deep blue sea remain a mystery to scientists, including the so-called “ghost sharks”, and they’ve been puzzled by a new species discovered in the deep waters of New Zealand.

Sharks are often considered one of the most terrifying ocean dwellers, but wait until you hear about ghost sharks! Also known as chimaeras, spookfish are a group of cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks and rays, which are incredibly hard to spot because they live at great depths in the Pacific Ocean.

Another thing that makes them unique is the absence of scales and the fact their skeletons are made completely of cartilage. The new species discovered in New Zealand was been given the scientific name “Harriotta avia”, after the the grandmother of one of the research team members. In addition to a scale-free skin, it also has a long and narrow snout, broad pectoral fins, and beak-like teeth.

Dr. Brit Finucci, one of the scientists who discovered the Australasian Narrow-nosed Spookfish, expressed hope this discovery will teach them more about “ghost sharks”. Since they typically live at depths of up to 2,600 meters (1.6 miles), they’re extremely hard to study and monitor, and not much is known about their biology or habitat.

Donna Smyth is the embroidery artist behind Stitch in Twine, and most of her recent creations see her exploring one common subject. After looking for inspiration everywhere around her, Smyth decided to focus on capturing the extraordinary beauty of insects through embroidery art.

Smyth decided to give embroidery a shot after a trip to a local craft gift shop three decades ago, and she’s been obsessed with it ever since.

“There is nothing on Earth quite as beautiful as embroidery to an embroiderer. The thrill of stitching and finishing a piece brings happiness to the embroiderer. It is a gift to us that we get joy from stitching that others sometimes do not understand. But we know and understand this gift and cherish it,” she wrote on her Etsy page.

Smyth can stitch together pretty much anything, but insects are definitely her favorite subject. She’s a huge fan of moths, butterflies, and dragonflies, and her hoops are a love letter to these extraordinary creatures.

In addition to sharing her art with almost 40,000 followers on Instagram, Smyth is also running a successful Etsy page. She’s using this platform to sell digital PDF patterns, helping other people who love embroidery and insects as much as she does kick-start their creative journey.
