When you think about pets, dogs, and cats probably jump to mind first. But what about those of us who like our animal friends a little more… amphibious? If you’re considering adding a unique twist to your pet collection, you might be wondering: Can frogs make good pets? Absolutely, and there’s a lot to love about these little hoppers. Let’s dive into the world of pet frogs and see what makes them so intriguing and, yes, even adorable.

Low Maintenance

First things first, frogs are relatively low maintenance compared to pets like dogs or cats. They don’t require daily walks or constant attention, making them a great choice for pet lovers who might not have a lot of free time.

Quiet Companions

If you live in an apartment or a space where noise is a concern, frogs could be the perfect fit. They’re generally quiet, especially compared to a barking puppy or a meowing cat at 3 a.m.

Monarch butterflies are one of the most graceful insects out there, and their black and orange wings helped them become an incredibly popular butterfly species. There’s probably a lot you don’t know about these winged creatures, so we’re bringing you several interesting facts about them.

Intriguing Name

It’s believed that monarch butterflies owe their common name to King William III of England. Their Greek name “Danaus plexippus” can be translated as “sleepy transformation”, and it’s believed they’re named after Danaus, Zeus’ great-grandson, and Plexippus, the son of Danaus’s twin brother.

Great Migration

One of monarch butterflies’ most interesting traits are their migratory habits. They can fly for over 3,000 miles on their migratory journeys, which takes place over four generations of butterflies, in an attempt to leave North America for the warmer climates of Mexico.

Amazing Orientation

One study suggests that monarch butterflies are such great navigators because the ultraviolet opsin protein in their eyes helps them to orient themselves with the sun during their long migratory journey.

Defense Mechanism

Monarch butterflies feed on milkweed during their larval stage. In addition to being their main source of food, milkweed also helps monarchs keep predators at bay because the milkweed toxins can be poisonous for other animals, despite not harming the caterpillars.

Summer is just around the corner, and you’re probably already plotting your beach vacation, but it’s important to pay close attention to creatures lurking underwater.  Jellyfish can turn your tropical getaway into a painful ordeal, but our tips will help you avoid getting stung by them.

Right Place, Right Time

The best way to avoid jellyfish altogether is to be in the right place at the right time. Avoid swimming and diving in areas known to have many jellyfish, especially during peak season. You can even check a jellyfish forecast to avoid potential encounters that could turn dangerous.

Stay Alert

Even if you get informed about it before heading to the beach, it’s a good idea to stay alert when in areas with occasional jellyfish sightings. Keep an eye out for jellyfish in the water and on the shoreline, and don’t try to touch them or go anywhere near them to avoid the sting. It’s also a good idea to wear a protective suit and footwear while swimming.

First Aid Basics

Even if you take all the precautions, jellyfish stings can still occur so it’s good to know some first aid basics. Remove any remaining tentacles, rinse the sting with seawater or vinegar, soak the area in warm water for 30 minutes to release the toxins, and consider using painkillers and seeking medical assistance if you’re experiencing a strong reaction.

Have you ever complained about your long commute to work? Well, prepare to feel a bit sheepish because there’s a feathery friend out there who makes our travel woes look like a walk in the park. Today we’re taking a look at the Arctic tern, a bird that literally goes to the ends of the Earth on its migration path. Let’s take a closer look.

The Ultimate Globetrotter

The Arctic tern is unassuming in appearance, with its sleek white body, black cap, and red beak and legs. But, in fact, it’s an extreme athlete! Every year, the Arctic tern migrates from its breeding grounds in the Arctic Circle to the Antarctic and back again. This epic journey can span over 43,500 miles annually. To put that into perspective, that’s like flying around the circumference of the Earth almost twice!

@pavlinasudrich Felt alone in a lot of cities. Never felt alone in the bush. #alone #nature #birds #bird #arctictern #fishing #animals ♬ Je te laisserai des mots – Patrick Watson

Why the Long Journey?

You might wonder, why go through all that effort? Well, the Arctic tern has a pretty good reason: endless summer. By migrating from one pole to the other, the Arctic tern enjoys continuous daylight, basking in the summer of the northern and southern hemispheres. It allows the terns to access abundant food sources and optimal breeding conditions.

The Italian island of Alicudi has recently encountered an unusual problem. Its wild goat population has been on the rise, and they are threatening to completely take over. This prompted the island’s mayor, Riccardo Gullo, to launch an interesting “Adopt a Goat” program.

Alicudi has an area of three square miles with 100 people living there. The number of goats, on the other hand, is six times larger than the human population. The goats are now posing a threat to the island’s vegetation while also destroying gardens and entering people’s houses.

In an effort to find a peaceful solution to the problem, Gullo decided to offer the goats for adoption. Anyone who wants to own a goat, farmers, and individuals, can claim one.

“We absolutely do not want to even consider culling the animals, so we are encouraging the idea of giving them away,” said Gullo via Guardian. “Anyone can make a request for a goat, it doesn’t have to be a farmer, and there are no restrictions on numbers.”

The goats were originally brought to the island two decades ago by a farmer. They were later released in the wild under unknown circumstances and have been thriving. Initially, they lived in the area of island’s dormant volcano and didn’t pose trouble to the human residents. However, their increased numbers change that and they might have to find a new home.

Let’s talk about one of the oldest sports in the world—horse racing. This sport has a history as fascinating as any royal drama, and it started much earlier than you may think. So, saddle up as we take a closer look.

The Starting Gate

Believe it or not, horse racing predates the written word. The first records of horse racing trace back to the nomadic tribes of Central Asia around 4500 BC.

The Sport of Kings

In the 12th century, English knights returned from the Crusades with swift Arabian horses. This is when horse racing became a professional sport. By the time of King James I of England, the sport was dubbed the “Sport of Kings” because, well, only the wealthiest could afford to breed and train racing horses.

Horse Racing in America

Horse racing hopped over the pond to America with the British settlers. The first American race track was laid out on Long Island as early as 1665. By the 19th century, races like the Kentucky Derby started popping up, becoming the iconic events we know today.

The American twist? Thoroughbreds. America went all in on breeding these fast horses, making the U.S. a powerhouse in the racing world.

Alpacas and llamas are so frequently mistaken for one another that some people think they are actually one animal with two different names. While both species are members of the lamoid family and have been domesticated by humans for thousands of years, they have a number of differences that are easily noticeable once you know about them. Check some of the most obvious ones below.

Size

One easy way to differentiate an alpaca from a llama is their size. Alpacas are smaller, reaching an average height between 32 and 39 inches at their shoulders and weighing up to 200 pounds. Llamas reach a height of up to 4 feet at the shoulders and can weigh up to 450 pounds.

Face

There is a noticeable difference between alpacas and lamas when you look at their faces. Alpacas have round and blunt faces and short ears while llamas have a longer face with less fur on it and banana-shaped ears.

Coat

Alpacas are covered with a dense and short coat of hair, which is more desirable in wool production. Llamas, on the other hand, have long and coarse hair.

Personality

Finally, alpacas and llamas have a different personality. Alpacas are timid and heard animals while llamas prefer to be on their own and are known to be short tempered.

If you love music and dogs in equal measure, we’re bringing you a brilliant Instagram page that mixes two of your biggest passions into one. Albums On a Doog is Instagram’s No. 1 spot for animal lovers who are in the mood to discover some new music, and it will truly help you broaden your horizons.

When @albums_on_a_doog was first launched in 2021, it was initially run by two good girls, Rosie and Lily. They took Instagram by storm with their immaculate taste in music, but Rosie sadly passed away last summer at 13, after suffering from a cancerous mouth tumor.

It’s now up to Lily to share the amazing album recommendations with the world, and she’s doing a pretty fantastic job. You’ll find hundreds of amazing suggestions while scrolling through this Instagram page, including such classics as Jeff Buckley’s Grace, Nirvana’s Nevermind, and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon.

Albums On a Doog’s posts will give you nostalgia overload since most of the albums on this page came out decades ago. This Instagram page champions the power of physical media and celebrates such genres as rock, grunge, punk, and emo. In addition to being pretty fun, Doog’s posts are quite educational because they sometimes feature interesting fun facts about each album.

Having an owl as a pet is pretty much mission impossible and requires a special set of skills, but one woman is making it work. Alura Cora of Big Talons is a licensed falconer who became a huge social media sensation after sharing snippets from her life with her pet owl Michael.

Cora dedicated her life to rescuing, stabilizing, and rehabilitating injured birds of prey, and this isn’t simply a casual hobby. She’s a licensed falconer and federally licensed propagator, who’s using her social media platform to educate the public about birds of prey in need.

Cora is best known as the owner of pet owl Michael, but if you’re thinking of welcoming an owl into your home – think again. This is illegal without proper permits, and she’s constantly stressing out how hard it can be to take care of wild animals without proper training.

“The way Michael is portrayed online is a small snippet of life with Michael, owls are messy, incredibly time-consuming, and they have the potential to develop behavioral issues related to puberty that can result in them becoming very dangerous” she explains on Instagram.

In addition to sharing her adventures with Michael, Cora is using her social media platforms to spread awareness about other birds of prey facing many dangers and often falling victim to human interference.

Most people know raccoons as cute animals that occasionally dig through their trash or make a home in their sheds. But there is much more to trash pandas than meets the eye. It turns out they are quite intelligent and fascinating animals. Here are some facts about them that might surprise you.

Raccoons are Surprisingly Smart

Studies have shown that raccoons are among the smartest animals in the wild. If they manage to do a certain task, they will still remember the solution three years later. They are also considered highly trainable.

Raccoons Can Produce More Than 50 Sounds

Raccoons have developed vocalization skills. They are able to produce more than 50 different sounds ranging from squealing to hissing and even purring.

Raccoons Can Be Found Almost Anywhere in the U.S.

Raccoons can be found in all parts of the United States except the desert and rocky mountains. They live in all surroundings, with their only requirement being that there is a source of water nearby.

Raccoons Are Loners

Raccoons are known as loners of the animal world. They usually don’t live in groups and are known to mate with multiple partners during their lifespan. In the latter case, the female raccoon is responsible for raising raccoon babies, while the male raccoon runs away from the responsibility.

Raccoons Are Nocturnal Animals

There is a reason you encounter raccoons almost exclusively at night. They are nocturnal animals, meaning they sleep during the day and get out to look for food at night.
