A group of scientists from Canada’s University of Guelph recently discovered that queen bumblebees can survive underwater for a week during their hibernation period. The discovery, which was detailed in a study published in Biology Letters journal, was made by an accident.

The scientists were performing an experiment to determine the effects of pesticides in soil on bumblebees. As part of the experiment, hibernating queen bumblebees were placed in tubes filled with soil to mimic their natural environment. During colder seasons, male and worker bumblebees die while the queen makes its way underground and enters the state of hibernation to survive the harsh environment.

During the experiment, the tubes with queen bumblebees were placed in a refrigerator, which caused some of them to be filled with water due to condensation. However, it turned out that the water didn’t cause any harm to queen bumblebees.

The scientists then decided to run another experiment, this time filling the tubes with various degrees of water. The queen bumblebees were kept in the tubes for various amounts of time, including 21 of them being fully submerged in the water for one week to no effect. Eight weeks later, 17 of them were still alive. The control group, featuring bees that were kept dry at all times, had a similar survival rate, with 15 out of 17 queen bumblebees still being alive after eight weeks.

Scientists are not exactly sure how queen bumblebees are able to survive so long underwater, but believe it has something to do with diapause. This occurrence is common in the insect world and sees insects closing the openings in their bodies and keeping their oxygen intake at a minimum to survive in unfavorable surroundings. Queen bumblebees probably evolved to be able to survive underwater due to flooding that can take place while they are hibernating underground.

“One-third of all bumblebee species around the world are in decline right now, and so if we are able to discard flooding as being a potential threat to bees, then we can focus our attention on other threats that we know for sure are harming them,” ecologist Sabrina Rondeau, co-author of the study, told Globe and Mail.

Sure, social media has plenty of downsides. However, sometimes it seems like they are more than tolerable, considering some great things they bring. For example, recently, a pair of four-legged besties was adopted together thanks to a viral TikTok video.

Back in March, Bradshaw Animal Shelter shared a video with a story about a seven-year-old Chihuahua Stanley and four-year-old Bully Arthur. The two were best friends and arrived together at the animal shelter. They did everything together, including going on walks, “staring into the lobby,” and hanging on the couch.

“We know it’s unlikely that they’ll find a home together, but we want to try. Does anyone out there want to adopt Stanley and Arthur?” Bradshaw Animal Shelter asked in the video.

The video quickly went viral, with Stanley and Arthur’s story reaching hundreds of thousands of people. Many people wanted to help the duo get adopted, with one TikToker offering to pay for adoption fees while others offered help with transport. However, it turned out this wasn’t necessary.

A man named Alex ended up coming to Bradshaw Animal Shelter just two days after the video was posted, and both Stanley and Arthur were adopted, giving them a loving home and bringing their story to a happy ending.

It is easy to make a mistake and think babies from one animal belong to another species, especially considering how cute all animal babies are. And even the professionals are not immune to this.

UK charity The Cat Welfare Group recently shared an interesting story on their social media about how one of their staffers rescued a group of abandoned kittens only to realize they are baby foxes.

According to their Facebook post, The Cat Welfare Group was contacted by an individual who said he discovered a group of kittens under his deck. The deck was pressure washed prior to that, so the animals were quite cold and in danger of getting sick.

The Cat Welfare Group sent one staffer to recover the kittens, who immediately transferred them to a carrier and contacted the veterinarian in order to get them treated. While on hold, they picked up one of the kittens in order to weigh them, only to realize they were holding a baby fox in their hands.

Once the baby foxes were warmed up and fed, they were passed on to the local fox rescue organization. The fox rescue proceeded to look for a fox mum in order to reunite it with its babies. If they fail, the foxes will receive proper care before they grow enough to be able to return to the wild and survive on their own.

It is always heartbreaking to see pets being abandoned by their owners. However, thanks to goodhearted animal lovers, some of these tragic stories end up having a happy ending.

Earlier this year, staff of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay (HSTB), an animal shelter based in Tampa, Florida, found a tiny veiled chameleon in their lobby. Someone simply left it there inside a shopping bag.

The chameleon seemed in bad shape, so the shelter’s reptile expert took it to their home in order to nurse it back to health. After being shown some love, the chameleon, now named Pascal, quickly returned its colors and energy. This prompted HSTB to place a social media ad in an attempt to find him a new family.

“She is very friendly but not a beginner reptile pet! She eats live crickets, needs a lot of space for climbing, and requires humidity to get hydration and thrive!” wrote HSTB in the advert.

The HSTB social media followers were instantly charmed with Pascal. The chameleon didn’t lack suitors and ended up being adopted just a few hours later. A local family with reptile experience responded to the advert and didn’t hesitate to give her a loving home.

“Since being home, Gloria has updated that Pascal loves her new extra-large enclosure with the proper humidity and branches to crawl around in and loves being a part of the Brooks family!” shared HSTB in a follow-up post.

After the post went viral, Love Leo Rescue offered some background story about the adorable doggo.

According to their Instagram post, the dog’s name is Fig, and she is a three-year-old pitbull. Fig was abandoned by her owners during the holiday season and was placed at Victor Valley rural shelter in California. Before Hill stepped up to offer her a permanent home, the dog was staying with a foster family.

“We’re loving this adoption story and are so grateful we could be part of her journey,” added Love Leo Rescue. And we couldn’t agree more!

Judging by the photos, it seems like Fig and Hill are a match made in heaven and they are in for many adventures. We hope other celebrities will follow Hill’s lead and adopt dogs instead of buying them.

Pets can provide us with joy and companionship, but their lifespan is usually much shorter than ours. Unfortunately, this means that at some point we have to say goodbye to them. Minnesota-native, Jeanna Smith, will probably not have to go through this loss because her pet will probably outlive her.

When Jeanna was 10 years old, back in 1962, she received George, a pet tortoise, as a birthday gift. George was the perfect pet for Jeanna because she was always a fan of turtles and she immediately developed a special bond with the animal. This relationship has lasted 56 years and still counting.

This duo has never parted, Jeanna even brought George to college with her (even though pets were not allowed in the dorms). When Jeanna met her husband Kirby, she immediately let him know that George was part of the deal. Her family, which now includes Kirby and their kids, also grew fond of this unusual pet and accepted him as a full-time member of the family.

After discovering a family of mice living in his garden, photographer Simon Dell didn’t even think of getting rid of his new tenants. Instead, he decided to make something awesome.

“I was out one day just taking photos of the birds in the garden and having just cut the grass I noticed something moving on the ground,” – said Simon. “I pointed my camera at the ground and was shocked but very happy to see a very cute little house mouse standing up just like a meerkat in the fresh cut grass.”

Dell took out his tools and started building a miniature village for them so they feel welcomed. The mice responded in the best way possible, eagerly posing in front of his camera and becoming adorable little models.

“The mice seem to love the log pile homes and wasted no time in moving in.” – he added. “They are wild animals so they still run if I get too close or move too fast but often I manage to sit down just a few feet away with a zoom lens and they seem happy to pop in and out for nuts a seed.”

Check out the photos of this cute mice family in their village below.
